How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Even though an extra source of cash after using all the transfers I had received is a challenge, I still hold onto the hope of initiating a new goal of buying another piece of land for my family. I a, currently running a small business alongside farming that I believe its proceeds will keep growing my savings and eventually boosting my dream of having another piece of land to add to the small one I currently have.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly was not biased in their operations as they first enlightened us in the initial meetings that were held in the preliminary stages before enrollment. We all understood what the program was all about and could not complain at the end since we understood every part of it. I feel satisfied and thankful that I have been able to do a lot over a short time.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I registered a lot of transformations in my household after receiving my second transfer. I invested hugely in the construction of a new house. Even though I have not completed putting it up yet, the KES 31000 that I spent on the purchase of the construction materials that included timber, iron sheets, and nails did a great job that left only a small part that is yet to be completed on the floors and windows after paying the labor force. The old hut I had been living in will still be useful as a kitchen as well as a store as I enter the final stages of furnishing the new house. With my family of five, we are thankful to GiveDirectly for making our dream to one day live under a corrugated iron sheet roofed house come true. I spent the other KES 22000 that I had set aside on the payment of a piece of land that I partly paid with the first transfer. I had a small piece of land and had to add an extra piece that can allow us to run other income-generating activities on it.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
Upon confirming the receipt of my first transfer, I was so happy that I could not hold my tears of joy back. My children then were still taking their breakfast and on receiving the news, they all thanked God as they had been experiencing a serious disruption in studies since their school fees had never been paid to completion since they joined their secondary level. Everyone knew that this was a breakthrough as we had laid down plans together when I got enrolled in the program the past few weeks.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The piece of land I started paying is a great investment that has already brought a big difference in my daily life. After the first installment of KES 23000, I was given a go-ahead by the owner to start letting my livestock graze on it. This has allowed the grass on the other fields the cows had been herding on to regrow as they were already bare due to overgrazing. I am happy and could not find a better way to thank GiveDirectly but to just pray that more blessing to be upon the organization as they move around helping other people who are in dire need.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I had been living in a small piece of land for a long period. The homestead took a larger portion of the piece leaving a smaller part that could not allow me to do other income-generating activities like livestock keeping or even subsistence farming. I had been hoping to start saving towards buying an additional plot but the pressing need to pay school fees for my three children could not allow me. On receiving my first transfer, I decided to spend KES23000 out of the required KES45000 on a piece of land that my neighbor was selling. I promised him to keep paying in parts as I am hoping to complete it once I receive the second transfer. I also obtained the construction materials at KES 23500 that I am currently using in the construction of a larger semi-permanent house to replace the old grass-thatched hut that we had been living in for a long time. This will give us a spacious and warmer shelter devoid of leakages from the roof during rainy seasons. I also spent KES 1800 of the remaining amount on obtaining foodstuff and the remaining on settling school fees for my three sons currently in secondary school. I am glad about the progress I am making in my household since everything went as planned with the first transfer.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
As you can see how my house is, I can tell you that I am not comfortable. The grass that I used needs to be replaced because it leaks when there is rain. Last week, I sought new grass to replace the old ones and that meant I had to part with KES 1500 for transportation. I want change and since you have told me about these transfers, I will use KES 60,000 shillings to build a small iron roofed house to ease this stress. I will also use KES 30,000 to buy a cow because I do not own one and I spend KES 1200 a month to buy a litre of milk which is very costly. With the remaining amount, I will use it on my household needs like food, buy clothes for my children and pay some amount on school fees.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the mid morning because my children have gone to school and I have managed to provide for them breakfast and they will be able to get something to eat during lunch hour.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship I have faced is food security. Our land is less productive, look even at the maize that I planted in June, I will not harvest anything! I do not own a cow that can provide us with milk. We are casual laborers and with the amount that we get, it's hard for us to buy enough food for our family.
