How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My main objective for the upcoming year is to launch a business. I currently struggle to provide for my seven children because I do not have a steady source of income. I hope that starting a business will give me a second source of income. As a result, I will keep providing for my kids. I have also started raising some livestock, and I currently have a cow and five goats. It is something we want to achieve in the upcoming year. In the coming year, I hope to see them grow in number. I'll be able to generate some extra income from them, which I can use to pay for my kids' school supplies and food.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly does well in helping those in need in society by giving them cash transfers with no conditions. For many people, it has been of great assistance. Our burden has been reduced courtesy of the transfer. As a result, there is a general change in our society. Most people have built new houses because our houses were too old and small to accommodate all our family members. Some also found it easy to purchase food and start raising livestock. Those were goals that some of us could not accomplish at first. There is nothing that GiveDirectly does not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a single parent of seven children, and I do not have any close relatives to help me support them. I used $150 of the transfer to pay off my children's school fees. I also had a house that was still being built and was not complete. I, therefore, spent $100 to complete building it. Last but not least, I spent $200 on food since we ran out of some items. I am relieved to have my own house done now. Initially, my mother and I shared a house because there was no other option. I was sleeping in the same room with eight children, a situation that was quite inconvenient.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 5 when I was washing my dishes when I realised that there were three unread messages on my phone. I had to ask one of my children to verify the contents because I was quite engaged. Upon checking she realized that it was an Mpesa message from GiveDirectly. I had eagerly been waiting for this fortune and I couldn't hold my joy.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Being a single parent of four kids, I have been yearning to have a long-term investment in terms of livestock but I could not afford any. Therefore after receiving the cash I had to prioritise dairy farming. I thought of practising this since it has numerous benefits such as providing nutrition support and enhancing economic growth. Since I have been depending on casual jobs, and all my four children are still in primary schools, I am certain that by the time they will be transitioning to higher institutions, I will have enough saved enough money to support their education journey. This is because I am positive that soon I will start supplying milk to the nearby dairy shops and neighbours and generate an income. Apart from empowering my children, will also help in ending extreme poverty since I will be earning daily.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spend KES 10000 of my first transfers on paying school fees for my four children, one in college and the others in primary schools. As a single parent, it has been worrying me a lot as much as I have been trying to make ends meet, I could not raise the fees needed. It is now a relief to us because I am assured that they will study comfortably for the rest of the year. Also, I bought a wooden door to fix into my house because the initial one had worn out. To add to that, I bought livestock( dairy cow) and I am very optimistic that I will achieve most of my goals through it. One of them is paying fees for my children since I will soon start supplying milk to nearby dairy shops. With the remaining amount, I bought food for my family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I am a single mother of seven children. I divorced my husband eleven years ago. I am just a casual worker making charcoal and sale at Kaloleni market. I earn approximately KES 9000 per month. This money can only cater for food. My children are school at Bodoi primary and the first son is about to join college next year. My son learned through bursaries in his secondary school because I could not afford to pay his fees. His secondary fee was KES 200000 for all four years. Two of my children are yet to join form one next year. I am worried how they will make it due to me having no job. I will use KES 100000 to pay college fees for my son who is going to join college latest January next year. His course cost KES 300000. This money will boost me a lot. I am happy that my son will join college through Givedirectly money.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My first son did his KCSE examination on March 2022 and got a B plain grade. He is the first person to score such a grade in his compound. His marks brought happiness in my life because I knew that my struggle is not in vain.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Lack of job is the biggest challenge I am facing. I do charcoal burning which gives me approximately KES 9000 per month. This money cannot cater for all the family needs.
