How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Yes, my new goal is to buy some livestock. I spent my first transfer in buying 2 cows and 2 goats, which later died because of the severe effects of the drought that is facing our area. My plan is to purchase the new livestock and send them to a far place where there are favorable conditions for growth until such a time when there is an improvement in the weather in our area.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly has done extremely well by giving us unconditional transfer. I have faced first hand challenges because of the drought, which includes sleeping hungry, loss of jobs, lack of water and high food prices. The funds have helped me manage the situation and I am happy the burden of taking care of my family has eased in the current situation.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon receiving my second transfer, I spent KSH 30000 to buy three cows at KSH 10000 each. I bought the cows because I have wanted to own cows since I became a farmer but could not due to lack of finances. The loss I got from losing the other livestock I bought using money from my first transfer drove me to buy other cows with simple plans about how they were going to feed and survive. Besides the cows, I bought six goats at KSH 15000. I have always wanted to own livestock and after receiving my second transfer; I thought it wise to fulfil my long lifetime wish. Later on I fell ill and partially lost my eyesight. I visited the hospital where i underwent an operation on my eyes and I paid a medical bill of KSH 3000. I am currently still under medication since the situation has not completely changed. After falling ill, I could no longer work and I had to survive using the money that was left to buy food and other essential items for myself.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 10 am, I was at my house washing my clothes when I heard my phone ringing. Being illiterate, I couldn't understand the message content. At first, I thought they were normal messages from the service provider. I continued with my work until I was done and decided to take my phone to my daughter-in-law to interpret the message for me. I was so excited when she break the good news that I had received my transfer. I immediately Informed my spouse who was very happy since we had been eagerly waiting for this aid from the day we were enrolled into the program.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my life is that I am now able to meet the basic needs of my family especially getting food without much battle. Previously, we could go to bed without food for two days a week. Furthermore, I have some savings for my future after starting livestock rearing. I am grateful for the aid that gave hope to the hopeless and home to the homeless.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 18,000 to purchase 2 cows and 2 goats, this was a long-term investment for our future. I was planning to sell them when they multiply to cater to any emergency that might arise in the future. This is because I did not have any investment for my family and I always found it tough whenever I encounter any uncertainty in my life. In addition, I spent KES 10,000 to purchase iron sheets, my plan is to renovate my house which is leaking and about to downfall by putting up a new roof. Furthermore, I set aside KES 10,000 for labour charges. With the remaining part, I bought some pairs of clothes for every family member and bought enough food with the rest of the transfer.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means proper medication. I have been suffering from chronic ulcers since last year but due to financial instability, I was not able to seek medication from referral hospitals. I intend to spend 40,000 shillings for the treatment this also includes other expenses like transport. I believe that this problem will come to an end and be able to perform my work and provide for my family basic needs. Other than that, I am planning to spend the remaining amount to invest on livestock which is a long time invest and will generate income for my family.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Evening is the happiest part of the day. It is at this time when I have enough time to rest after a long day full of stress on my health status. Thinking of when I will be healed and continue with my duties.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My health has deteriorated due to sickness. I have been suffering from chronic ulcers since last year. I have visited several clinics without any success. This has hindered me from working and provide for my family's needs such as food. It is also expensive because I have to buy 1 dose at 3000 shillings which last for at least 1 month. Therefore, sickness is the biggest challenge I have faced.
