What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
A week before receiving the funds from GiveDirectly two of my children had been kicked out of school due a huge debt is tuition fee that I was yet to clear. Those a couple of days that they were home I was extremely stressed and they were sad as well because they hated missing out on school but unfortunately I had no money to send them back and they would have probably stayed longer were it not GiveDirectly sending the transfers the time they did. After receiving the transfers I went ahead and paid KES 1,000 that was split equally between them and the following day they were back to school. Upon taking care of school matters I opted to settle for nutrition next because we barely had any food in the house and at times the kids would stay hungry throughout the day and night. So I went on and used KES 1,000 where I bought five packets of maize flour then also bought tomatoes, potatoes, kales, cabbage and sardines.

In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Getting help from this Organization is what excites me. Life is hard here. Getting food continuously is a struggle. Having an organization that comes in at my moment of need and without asking for something in return is a miracle.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a widow who depends on farming for my sustenance. For the past year, this area has not received sufficient rainfall to support farming. This left me stranded. I had no farm produce ( maize) to rely on. It is my children who have supported me all through. To reduce the dependency aspect on my children, I used the money I received to buy food ( maize flour and sugar).

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
My sickness was taking a toll on me an when I saw the money had finally arrived, I was joyful because I could afford the hospital and the pain I was feeling could finally go away considering my old age any sort of ailment puts me down for a while, so I was happy I could finally get treatment.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
I barely get any work considering my age and also being a widow I rarely have any support financially, so I am thankful I could mange to afford a meal and most importantly I could finally get back to being healthy once I had received treatment.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Before the arrival of the funds I had been ailing for quite sometime and my health was deteriorating and once the money arrived I took myself to hospital and I got treated and received medication which cost KES 300. Then since I had no food in my house I went ahead and bought four packets of maize flour which was KES 400. The remaining balance I bought vegetables including kales, potatoes as well as milk and it all cost me KES 400.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
The construction of my house which is made of rusted iron sheets is my priority. Will also buy a wooden bed and a mattress since a rugged mat is my current bedding. The rest shall be directed to my medication(asthmatic) and food.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My nights are lonely and with a lot of discomforts attributed to the condition of my house. It is only during the day when am at peace. I enjoy the company of my grandchildren, making fun as I play kiddish games with them.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Poor housing is the challenge I presently face. During the rain season, the roof leaks profusely, while on normal days, the rattling of the rusted iron sheets gives me sleepless nights. Besides, the house lacks door shutters and windows worsening my health since I suffer from asthma.
