How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
In the coming year, I am excited about venturing into maize farming on my 2-acre piece of land. To fund this agricultural endeavor, I will allocate a capital of $200, and I am prepared to work various casual jobs to raise this amount. The primary aim is to ensure a steady and sustainable food source for my family of four. With meticulous planning and dedication, I intend to use the capital to acquire essential resources such as quality seeds, fertilizers, and other inputs necessary for successful maize cultivation. The prospect of transforming the barren land into a productive maize field brings a sense of hope and purpose. Despite the challenges that may arise, I am determined to overcome them through hard work and resilience. This venture is not only about meeting immediate nutritional needs but also about laying the foundation for a more self-reliant and secure future. I am optimistic that the fruits of my labor will not only nourish my family of four but also contribute to an improved livelihood. The vision is to see the land flourish, yielding a bountiful harvest that sustains us and fosters a sense of accomplishment and self-sufficiency.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Thanks to GiveDirectly, families in our region have received crucial assistance that has not only put food on the table but has also uplifted lives. The commendable impact of this support has been profound, offering hope and a pathway out of hardship for many. Expressing gratitude seems inadequate for the positive changes this support has brought. The ripple effect of families like mine receiving the help they need is immeasurable, creating a positive shift in communities and fostering a sense of resilience and empowerment. The success stories born out of GiveDirectly's initiatives stand as testimonials to the impact of thoughtful and direct assistance. As we extend our thanks, let us also recognize the importance of spreading this kind of support to regions that may still be grappling with economic hardships.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Receiving those transfers was a turning point for my family of four, and I eagerly set out to make impactful changes with the newfound financial support. One of the immediate needs was addressing the cramped living conditions we faced in our small, two-roomed house. I allocated $300 to expand and enhance our living space, providing my family with a more comfortable and spacious environment. Recognizing the importance of sustaining our daily needs, I allocated $50 for maize, a step towards food security and a relief from the uncertainty that sometimes accompanied our family's dependence on casual jobs such as weeding and tomato picking. To improve the quality of our rest, I invested $30 in a bed. Understanding the potential for future income and sustainability, I allocated $100 to acquire a goat. Beyond being a source of nourishment, the goat represents an investment that may grow into a larger flock, providing additional income and stability for our family in the long run. With these thoughtful allocations from the transfers, I am elated and excited about the positive changes in our lives.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I vividly remember the moment I received my transfer. My husband excitedly came home to share the news that he had seen a text on my phone indicating that we had received money from GiveDirectly. A wave of joy and gratitude swept over me, as this support arrived unexpectedly. Experiencing a profound sense of relief, I understood that we could now actively pursue our goals. Without delay, we began the process of planning our next steps.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The transfer I obtained has sparked a significant transformation in my life, filling me with immense joy. A notable change is my ability to purchase two goats, providing my children with the enjoyment of milk, which was not possible before. Furthermore, the transfer enabled me to secure an abundant supply of food, ensuring that neither I nor my loved ones will experience hunger. This newfound sense of security and gratitude brings me great joy.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon receiving funds from GiveDirectly, I realized the possibility of acquiring dairy goats, a task that was previously challenging due to my husband's reliance on casual work for our livelihood and my own dependence on farming. Unfortunately, what we earned was often insufficient, leaving us living from hand to mouth. With two children to care for, we used $84 to purchase two goats. Additionally, I spent $16 for my medication and used the remaining $80 to buy two sacks of maize. I am now relieved to have enough food in the house, allowing us to enjoy two to three meals a day, a significant improvement from the past when we could only afford one meal. Furthermore, having milk in the house will contribute to the improved health of my children. We are immensely grateful for the support that has brought immense happiness into our lives.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
The transfers mean so much to us. I believe that it will transform our lives positively. We intend to use the first transfers to purchase household commodities such as utensils, food, and furniture. We intend to spend about $180 on this. For the second and third transfers, we intend to build a house and a kitchen. This is significant since we are forced to cook outside which is a challenge whenever it rains. In addition to this, we intend to purchase two dairy goats. This will be a source of milk and also income for our family. We are grateful that we are among those beneficiaries that will receive the transfers.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Our happiness has always come from our well-being. Despite my husband being deaf, I'm happy that we are well and no one has had to seek medical assistance over the last 6 months.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The main challenge we are facing currently is a lack of money. We depend solely on casual work which we get occasionally. Since my husband is deaf this makes it even more difficult for me and my family.
