Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The moment I received my transfer, I was busy preparing supper for my family. Then suddenly I heard my phone ringing, Upon checking I realised that I had received a sum of KES 55,000 from Segovia technology. I was overwhelmed with joy and happiness because this meant that I would be able to accomplish the goals that I had of owning a dairy cow. I then informed my children who were indeed thankful and happy and finally we embarked on planning how we would utilise the money. We are indeed grateful for the support that lifted our living standard amazingly
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life today is that I was able to purchase a dairy cow for my family. I am grateful because I have accomplished my goals and I am optimistic that with my second transfer I will be able to add more cows. GiveDirectly has empowered our lives and gave us hope for a better tomorrow. I am so grateful for the support that overwhelmingly impacted our lives positively.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a consistent farmer, widowed and blessed with five children. Upon the receipt of my initial transfer, I opted to purchase a dairy cow for my family. This is because initially, I owned a cow but I was forced to sell them to treat my husband who unfortunately passed on. Therefore I used all of the KES 45,000 on a dairy cow. I then used the remaining amount. I am grateful for the support that lifted my living standard to a better one in society.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I lost my husband 8 years ago, leaving me behind with two children whom I have been raising on my own. We all live in one house which acts as the kitchen, sitting room, and bedroom. It is small and often gets smoky especially when we are cooking. We do not have an extra space too to host visitors whenever they visit, something that makes me feel ashamed. Also, my wish is to have separate bedrooms for privacy since my children are getting older every day. For this, I plan to use KES 40,000 to construct a bigger two-roomed house. For the rest of the money, I will use it to pay up school fees and other school necessities for my children. Receiving this money, therefore, means better housing and livelihood for my family.
What is the happiest part of your day?
For about two months now, we have been experiencing a lot of rainfall which has helped our small-scale farming. At the onset of the rains, I planted vegetables which are doing very well. This makes me happy, as I could sell and earn an income.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The main challenge is food insecurity. I'm getting old too, I can not farm as I used to do before. The piece of land I have is no longer productive, so as of now I depend on casual jobs to earn an income. The little I get mostly goes to food. These jobs are unreliable, so it is not certain to make a living every day.
