How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
In the coming year, I hope to save enough money to purchase another lactating cow. The cost of milk is currently high, and producing enough to sell is a good source of income that I may be able to generate by acquiring a lactating cow. This will also allow them to alternate breeding seasons, ensuring a steady supply of milk for my family. In the long run, I intend to sell the offspring to fund the purchase of another piece of land, as we are currently living on my parents' piece of land.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
The flexibility to choose how we spent GiveDirectly funds was the best approach because it ensured that each recipient addressed individual challenges. Many people worked hard to improve their lives, and the results are satisfying in that everyone is pleased with their choices. The program was well-executed and free of bias because everyone had the opportunity to interact with the staff during the initial stages of enrollment. No one was denied the opportunity to enroll because GiveDirectly applied the same criteria to everyone without consulting the village leadership.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Previously, I kept my neighbor's cow, which always provided enough milk during peak seasons for my three-person family. I had been looking for ways to raise enough money to buy another lactating cow for a long time, but financial constraints prevented me from doing so. When I received the second transfer, I decided to spend $320 on a cow that calved a month later and is now producing enough milk for my family and surplus for sale. I also spent $50 on a sheep that I intend to breed and then sell to pay other household bills and my child's school fees. In addition, I used the remaining funds to expand my clothing business, which had seen a drop in sales. I am pleased that it has improved and that its profit margin is now higher than in previous months. I was able to provide food for my family as well as pay all of my other household bills thanks to the business.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 8 am while at the dining table with my wife taking breakfast. That's when I heard a message alert on my phone. On checking, I had received KES 55,000 from GiveDirectly. At the sight of the good news, I and my wife were very happy and withdrew the money that morning.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life since I received the transfers is building a spacious Iron roofed and timber-framed house. This is more comfortable and can accommodate many visitors. Also, the fact that I have bought two bags of maize has reduced my daily financial burdens. Earlier, I used KES 450 per day as a household budget but this has reduced to KES 200 majorly on sugar.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a father of one and a second-hand clothes vendor for the past year. From my clothes business, I normally get a profit of KES 700 which helps in household consumption. Recently, when I received my transfers I spent KES 30,000 on a 15 Iron roofed timber-framed house. This is because earlier I had only one tiny grass-thatched that belonged to my mother and was built over 6 years ago. Additionally, I normally have many visitors who visit from time to time. Secondly, I bought a young bull at KES 15,000 because heifers of the same age are quite expensive. Once it is full-grown I can later sell it for a dairy cow which will be a source of milk for my family. Thirdly, I spent KES 7,000 on the latest clothing fashion for my family. Earlier I used to go for cheaper ones. Lastly, I spent KES 6,600 on two bags of maize. This is because maize is our staple food and getting it was quite a challenge. This can now sustain us for the next three months.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
It means that I will be able to build a new spacious house for my family, since my current house is small with thatched roof. My plan was to upgrade my house into iron sheet roofed standard. We are pleased with my family that our plans are going through after we receive money from Give Directly.
What is the happiest part of your day?
We were so happy when we were given a lactation cow by our relative. My family can now get enough milk for consumption without incuring much cost
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I have the challenge of raising enough capital for my second hands cloths business. My revolving capital is KES 13,000 and that is not enough for me to meet the market scope. My capital is less by KES 15,000.
