How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My new goal is to purchase a small piece of land at our nearby small market. The intention is to construct temporary rental houses that I will rent at KES 1000 per room. This income will assist me to relieve the burden of providing food and other basic needs for the family. At the moment, we are forced to go to bed with empty stomachs affecting the nutrition of my children.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, visiting the recipients at there home and enrolling them gives the opportunity for good interactions. This make it easy to share the challenges we face and how we could solve them with the transfers. I do not see anything that GiveDirectly did not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
For 2 years, I have desired to boost my goat rearing but I lacked the finances to accomplish it. I invested KES 15,000 of the recent transfer by purchasing 5 goats. This is a good venture since they reproduce faster than cattle and are very profitable. I am planning to sell them once they reproduce to cater for any financial emergency that I might encounter in the future. Additionally, I used KES 10,000 to pay part of the fees for my son who is in form 4 and about to complete his secondary education in December. Moreover, I used KES 10,000 to clear the rental charges for him and that of my husband. With the remaining amount, I bought enough food for the family of 7 members since we are currently experiencing famine and the high cost of foodstuff due to inflation.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 7:45 in the morning when I was at my son's compound when I heard my granddaughter calling my name. I was about shocked because I did not expect it. However, I decided to go only to be surprised by the Mpesa message from GiveDirectly. I felt happy and I just wish you could how I jumped joyfully like a baby. This was a new beginning of my life and the right time to fulfill my heart's desires.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I was able to settle the fee arrears for my children. It is now a relief to me because my mind is at peace knowing that my kids are at school without any distractions. Also, they will be able to sit for the exams with their colleagues which has never been happening frequently. This has been demotivating them hence affecting their performance. As a mother my dream was to see them graduating and becoming better people in life. My spouse and I have however been struggling to make ends meet and the little earnings would only fund the household's basic needs. I am so happy that finally, I can see light at the end of the tunnel. It is also an assurance that their future is brighter and greener.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my first transfer on buying a mattress that cost KES 5000. This was for my children who had been sleeping on the floor for years as a result of the unavailability of decent beddings. Also, I cleared the college fees of KES 22000 for my two sons; one in college pursuing a teaching course, and the other one in secondary school. This has been the major challenge that I have been experiencing for the last ten years. My children were always at home because of the huge fee balances. To add to that, I bought spare parts at KES 6000 for my motorbike which had broken down a few months ago. This was a big blow to me because I was no longer earning. With the remaining amount of money, I bought foodstuffs for my eight family members and decent clothes.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have a child who is in form three at Palakumi secondary school and he is often sent home due to a lack of school fees. Currently, he has a school fee arrears of 20,000 KES. Receiving this money means paying all the school fees for my child so that he can complete his secondary level. I will use the remaining amount of money to support my child who is building her house. I have been using the same structure with her and she is struggling to complete her house.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My daughter-in-law got a job in Saudi Arabia last year in December of 2021 as a house help. This brought joy and happiness to me as I know the remittance she will send will help in improving our standard of living.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My child was married in Kauma village and she had marital issues with her husband. I am now staying with her and her three children since last year. This means we, parents, have to take care of her entire family and this has brought overdependence on the little income my husband is earning from welding which currently does not settle all the family expenses.
