How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
The difference in my life is that I now own livestock. Before the transfers, I had plans for saving and investing in livestock keeping. I knew this was my dream and nothing would make me happier than owning a herd of livestock. But the job I did was not well rewarding to raise savings enough for investing in livestock.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
The enrollment was fair and free, The officers were approachable, The money was sent directly to our phones and this increased my confidence with the authenticity of the transfers.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent part of my second transfer on buying iron sheets, building poles, and nails at 13000. This was to facilitate the construction of our new house. I also bought four goats at 11000 for rearing. This was one of my goals but reaching it was the issue due to lack of finances. I am glad GD helped me realize it. With the remaining amount, I paid school fees and bought household food items.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
I have always desired to build a new house since the one I was living in was in a bad state. Due to limited resources, I could not afford to buy the required materials since every coin was spent on the basic needs and left nothing to save for this purpose. However, my life is currently different because when I received my first transfer, I managed to purchase enough building materials and paid for labor. I am now in the process of building a decent house. Constructing a new house is the biggest difference in my daily life because were it not for GiveDirectly, I would still be living in my old shoddy house. I am grateful to them for the financial support.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was woken up by a message notification on my phone. On checking, I could hardly believe that I had finally received my transfer from Give Directly. I was very surprised and grateful for having received that amount. I considered myself lucky and favoured because it is hard for someone to give you such amount of money during these harsh economic times.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I have been planning to build a house for my family. The one I was living in previously was in a bad state. But due to limited resources, my plans did not succeed soon enough. I thank God for using GiveDirectly to come to us. When I received this financial support, my dream of building a decent house was finally fulfilled. I managed to buy enough materials. I bought enough iron sheets, building poles, timber and nails for the construction of my new house. In addition to that, I also spent KES 4000 to pay for my children's school fees. I did this so that they would be allowed back to school. I spent the rest of the money to pay for other household expenses.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means a decent house for me and my family. Our current one is made of grass and is very old, almost collapsing. During cold and rainy seasons, it leaks terribly forcing us to seek shelter from our neighbors to avoid health complications. On top of this, we plan to invest in livestock such as oxen to aid in farming and goats for financial assistance in times of need or emergencies.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the evening when my whole family is back home from their various engagements. I love sitting with them, eating together and catching up on how the day was.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Our main struggle in life is lack of finances to meet our direst need of better housing. My husband makes traditional beds made of wood and rope but the income he gets from this is very minimal. Lately, there has been low demand because of the rise of preference for modern beds which has adversely affected our source of livelihood. Also, the needs in our family far much surpass the income, most of it is directed towards educating our children and food which is our priority leaving us with very little for construction etc.
