How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I am looking forward to plant maize on the two acre piece of land that I bought and accomplishing this means that I will have enough food for my family and I will sell the surplus to pay school fees for my children.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
What GiveDirectly does well is helping the less fortunate in the community to upgrade their lives. Personally my life will never be the same again and so is to many more others whose their life's story will change forever.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a single mother of three children and for the longest time, I have been practicing farming on my fathers small piece of land and thus, I have not been able to harvest enough for the family. This has in turn made life difficult for me because I have to utilise the small income that I get from doing casual jobs to buy food, pay school fees and cater for other basic needs. Being enrolled in the program was a great breakthrough for me because I spend both my first and second transfers to buy a two acre piece of land. Moving forward I am hopeful that I will be able to do farming on this piece of land and I will harvest enough both for domestic and commercial purposes.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
Though plagued by a severe headache, I was busy making pots for sale that evening. That's when I heard a message alert on my phone. At first, I hesitated to check what it was because I thought it was the normal marketing message. But later when I decided to check, I confirmed to have received KES 55,000 from GiveDirectly. At the sight of this good news, I was filled with joy and my headache just disappeared.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is happiness because I bought my piece of land. This is because I have been living in the land allotted to me by my late father but my brothers were not pleased with this decision. Therefore, I have been desiring my land but couldn't afford it.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
For the past 13 years, l have depended on pot making as an income source to feed my family and school my kids as well. Additionally, I rely on savings and substance farming of maize and sweet potatoes. As a single mum still living in my father's compound I had always desired to have my piece of land. Therefore, when I received the transfers I spent KES 40,000 on the purchase of an eight-piece piece of land. I am grateful because I won't have to be mocked by my brothers anymore. Secondly, I spent KES 4,000 of the transfers on settling a hospital bill. I also bought a bag of maize at KES 3, 500 which can sustain my family for the next two weeks. Initially, my weekly household budget was KES 500 a week but GiveDirectly has relieved me of all this. Thirdly, I spent KES 4,050 on the latest clothing fashion. This is because I could only afford second-hand clothes. I have saved the rest for household expenditure.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means we shall have peace of mind as a family. This is because I will utilize the transfers on taking my eldest daughter to polytechnic to pursue her dream course in tailoring. I have been having sleepless nights since she dropped out of school due to prolonged ailments (she has been suffering from a unique disease because her head would swell and doctors could not diagnose it). Ensuring that all my three children lead their desired lives and pursue their dreams is a great achievement.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I had been depressed for about three years when my daughter was ailing. About six months ago, I afforded to take her to the hospital after selling all my property (livestock) and conducting a fundraiser to raise the required funds. Fortunately, she responded well to the treatment. I am happy about this since I am much relieved of the stress.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I have never had peace since my daughter became sick about three years ago. Although she is has improved a lot healthwise, she is yet to get fully healed. I wish I could get the needed money to seek medication from a better hospital. Even so, I believe that God will heal her.
