How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
By year's end, I aim to have procured a motorbike to launch a transportation business within my village. This venture will provide a consistent income stream, enabling me to meet my family's necessities and initiate further family projects to sustain us.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Give Directly excels in distributing cash equitably throughout the village, avoiding any form of bias or discrimination. This approach has significantly empowered various groups including the youth, women, and even those who previously had no experience managing household finances. The straightforward cash transfer method has further motivated many villagers to pursue their entrepreneurial visions and achieve their financial aspirations.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon receiving my initial transfer from Give Directly, I chose to invest in a plot of land. A friend had offered it at a favorable price and allowed me to make a partial payment. With my subsequent transfer, I settled the remaining balance of $130 to uphold our trust and ensure our relationship remained intact without payment delays. I further acquired two goats for $70 as an investment for my family and set aside $220, aiming to eventually purchase a second-hand motorbike.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
As expected, I awakened and exited for my daily hustle since I am a casual laborer. Although it was harder for me to take up the day's hustle because I was very hungry since I did not have the privilege of taking some meals the previous evening. Since I had no alternative, I had to force myself to go to the forest to burn some charcoals for sale. On my way, I received a message on my phone, and upon checking what kind of information it was, I saw $550 had been deposited into my account. Since I was not familiar with the name of the sender, I was shocked at where the money might have come from. Then I remembered the GiveDirectly officers who promised us this amount of money. While still in doubt, I called a neighbor who was also enrolled in the program and confirmed that they had also received the same amount from the same sender as mine. I concluded that it should be the same. I was filled with joy for having some money at a time when I needed the most. I changed direction to the nearest Mpesa shop to withdraw some amount for food.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Before receiving the transfer, I used to struggle to make ends meet. Poverty made me venture into some tiring businesses to support the situation. Life was a struggle but now I am grateful for the cash transfer. It has boosted us and enabled us to get some meals daily unlike before when we usually took meals only in the evening due to lack of food and sometimes we went for at least two days a week without meals.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Receiving this transfer has been the beginning of my life transformation. Before, I was living in a hat-like house because it did not fit the caliber of a structure for a human being to live in. Broken walls and old-leaking grasses were used in the roofing is what my house was all about apart from being small and muddy inside when it rains. Therefore, I opted to buy some building materials to construct a one-room mud-walled house with an iron sheet roof plus a sitting room. I bought 19 pieces of iron sheets for $171, building poles, and roofing nails for $38. As of now, the contractor is on the site and he is building the house. I also set aside his labor charge which is $100. I am very happy about getting a nice house very soon that safely accommodates my family well courtesy of GiveDirectly. Thereafter, I paid $20 school fees for my son who had been sent out of school for fees. Since I had been relying on charcoal burning, I opted to save the remaining amount as I figure out the suitable investment that I will venture into to do away with the tiring charcoal burning business.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
I have a family of six members with four being children and we all live in a one room house. It is not spacious for the family. Sometimes I seek shelter from neighbours giving room for the wife and children to use the house. I do charcoal making for sale earning approximately $50 per month which caters for food only. I cannot build a spacious house. I will use $700 to build a two room house for the family. This will restore my dignity on the community. I will also use $300 to buy ten goats as an investment. This will help me pay school fees for my children once they join secondary school.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I am a subsistence farmer and we have missed rain in our community for almost four years. However, Last year during the short rain season on December I got a good harvest that last for three months. I felt very happy to have food for the family.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Lack of house for the family is the challenge I am facing. This has forced me to seek shelter during night time from neighbors and live the children and the wife use the house I have.
