How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Like most parents, I'm sure, my greatest wish is to see my children complete their education. Education is the greatest stepping stone I can offer them. With a good set of qualifications, the world would be their oyster! I wish I could live to see this dream become reality.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
To understand what GiveDirectly excels at, one would have to first look at what they have done for both my family and the larger part of our village. Houses have been built, livestock purchased, education facilitated, businesses started, others for both my family and the larger part of our village. Houses have been built, livestock purchased, education facilitated, businesses started, others boosted, etc. Basically, GiveDirectly excels at changing lives for the better. They truly have excelled at making our dreams come true. They are above reproach in my eyes, and I only wish they would continue to do their good work for years to come.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My main source of income is the pottery I create at home. The sales from my wares make me around $2.5 per day. My husband was a mason, but there isn't any work currently, so he is at home all day. We have a 1-acre farm where we grow maize and tomatoes. The maize is for domestic use, while the tomatoes we sell for $10 to $20 per crate. I say all this to paint a picture of how dire things were prior to the transfers from GiveDirectly. Thanks to the funds, I was able to buy one female cow, offering us milk for both domestic use and sale. I also got clothes for the whole family, i.e., myself, my partner, and the 3 kids. Food was next on the list. I bought enough to keep us fed for a while and stocked them in the pantry. My two eldest are in school. They are in Class 8 and Grade 6, with each needing $6 and $9, respectively, per term, for their education at Ngonyat Primary School. GiveDirectly enabled us to meet our needs with dignity and respect, and both myself and my husband continued to fulfill our responsibilities as parents to our children.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I can vividly recall that it was 8 pm when I was at home busy with household chores. Then suddenly, I heard my phone ringing. My children and I had surrounded the fireplace in preparing the evening meal. Upon checking what the message was all about, I realised that I had received a sum of KES 55,000 from Segovia technology. I was so happy and excited. My children too were overwhelmed with happiness throughout the evening. My husband too was not left out because we broke the good news to him upon arrival from work and he was delighted too. We then embarked on planning how best we would cash out the money.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have been able to accomplish my dreams in a short period. I was able to purchase a dairy cow which I never thought that I would have any time soon due to financial constraints. Secondly, I was able to buy decent clothes for my family. My children are all happy and excited to have the new clothes since the ones that they had were already old and some were worn out, And lastly, we have enough foodstuffs in the house. I am grateful to the organization for putting smiles on our faces and for transforming our living standards.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My source of income was shattered when I left for maternity leave, Life has been unbearable because we depend only on my husband's income which is barely enough to cater for all our needs. He works as a casual worker and together we are blessed with three children. Upon receiving my first transfer, my husband and I settled on acquiring a dairy cow worth KES 36,000 to cut the cost of buying milk daily which was very expensive yet we were forced to buy it since our children depend on it. I was unable to purchase one before due to financial constraints. Additionally, I bought foodstuffs and clothes for my family. We are indeed grateful for the support that uplifted our living standards high and in a short span.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means an increased source of income. I am a housewife and my husband works as a house construction person. He seldom gets a job and when lucks comes he gets an approximate wage of KES 250 a day. We, therefore, intend to purchase a dairy cow in which we will be able to sell milk and earn some cash. We intend to spend at most KES 30,000 on the first transfer to own one. This will also make me busy as I have free time doing nothing at home. Having an alternative source of income will be the joy of life because we will cater to the household needs without much struggle.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Good health is everyone's wish and I am happy that none of my family members has fallen sick in the past six months. We are living in a hard economic times where resources are scarce and the means to get them are scarce as well. Therefore, we are struggling to make ends meet through the little we get and having a healthy family is the joy of my life.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Boredom is the challenge I am currently facing. I am a housewife and we entirely rely on my husband for upkeep. I have 3 children; 2 are school-going children and 1 is yet to go. After my husband has left for work and my 2 children have gone to school, I am left at home with the younger child to take care of. The house chores barely lasts for an hour after everyone has left and I spend the rest of the day idling. Having nothing to keep me busy at home disgusts me a lot.
