How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Through this money, I managed to buy a pair of oxen that will aid me for farming purposes. Also, a heifer that I am keeping in my homestead. I know it will be producing milk for my family's consumption. I am planning to sell the surplus to earn an income. Besides,it's an asset to me which I can still sell the offspring in the future to meet my financial needs. I also completed my new house and I am now accessing a good shelter. Were it not for this financial support, I would still be sheltering in my neighbor's house.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly has been our savior in reducing the level of poverty considering the drastic changes that we have so far experienced through their financial support in a very short period of time. We have been empowered financially now our living standards have been uplifted. We now have livestock to depend on and also paying fees for our children, building new houses thus accessing a good shelter. There is nothing that GiveDirectly does not do well.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I was in the process of building a new house to live with my family but the materials got depleted in the process. When I received my second transfer, I purchased the remaining materials and finished the construction. I also paid for the labour cost. In addition to this, I also bought a heifer which I am currently keeping in my homestead. My expectation is that it will reproduce and multiply. Besides, I will also be getting milk from it. I spent the remaining amount to provide daily foodstuffs for my family since there was prolonged drought and we did not harvest much to adequately feed my family.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
Owning the pair of oxen alone has brought much satisfaction to me for it was always my dream to own one. I had never managed to buy for I did not have enough money even for a calf. Through the transfer, I was able to acquire them at last. To me, this is the biggest difference that the transfer has brought into my life and I thank GiveDirectly for making this possible.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I saw the message notification in the morning as I was on my farm weeding my crops. I checked to confirm who the sender was, only to realise that it was the very message that I have been eagerly waiting for. I was filled with happiness instantly as I read through that I had received my first transfer from GiveDirectly.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
On receiving my first transfer, I spent part of it on buying a pair of oxen in order to do early cultivation and timely planting. previously I was using farm tools that were not effective enough and the harvest was only a handful. And also I could not fully cultivate the whole farm because hiring was the only option that I had and it was expensive for me. The pair will fasten my farming and maximum utilisation of my farm, including increasing the acreage of cultivated land. This will boost and increase my harvests when the planting season comes. I also spent part of the transfer to pay for my children school fees for I was not in a good position financially to pay the arrears and I am happy that they going on with their studies comfortable. Lastly, I did some shopping for my family and on food also that was enough to take us for a longer period.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My greatest desire is to educate my children. This is because I believe when they are educated they will be able to get good jobs and help me out in future when am old and tired. I also wish to build a two bedroomed house since the one I used to live in recently fell down due to heavy rainfall. I had to move into my mother in law's house with my eight children but there is not enough room for all of us.This is how I intend to use my transfers.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My day starts very early in the morning at six and I go to the farm till ten. I later go with my children to collect firewood and fetch water. I then prepare lunch and eat with them. Now this is the time I am most happy because I have finished the day's work and spend the afternoon bonding with my children.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
As a family we are dependent on farming and my husband's job as a cattle herder in the nearby village called Guruguru. However, both are not enough to sustain us. My husband earns a salary of four thousand Kenya shillings every month which is not enough for food, education and other basic needs of my family. Farming too has not been fruitful due to the poor rains experienced in the area.
