How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My key focus right now, is taking of my mother-in-law who's almost 120 years old because she needs utmost attention. I would also love to expand my milk business when I get some capital.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly does everything well. For example, there's now water accessibility in my house because through the transfers I bought a big plastic water tank which can store volumes of water. In addition, there are great transformations in our village. Those who lived in grass-thatched houses have now built Iron roofed houses. Some who did not own livestock have bought dairy cows. Also, others who used to wear tattered clothes are now well dressed with the latest clothing fashion.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Two years ago, I started a milk buying and selling business which has helped to sustain my family. This is because currently, I am in my mid-60s and at my age, I no longer have the strength to do farming so I prefer dairy farming.
Before GiveDirectly, I had only one dairy cow which was the main source of livelihood. On its high season, it would produce eight liters of milk each day. In the morning I would sell four liters at KES 30 a liter and in the evening I would reserve for household consumption. This has been key in the settlement of the most basic household expenses like sugar, maize, washing soap, and other household items.
Recently, when I received the second transfers, I saw this as an opportunity to buy an additional dairy cow. So, I used KES 40,000 on the purchase of a dairy cow which is now due. This will not only act as a source of milk but also as an additional income source for my family.
Furthermore, because all my kids are all grown up, I was vested with the role of taking care of my mother in law who's almost 120 years old. And since she needs utmost care, I spent part of the remaining transfers on food because at her age she requires special diets. The rest I have saved majorly for household consumption whenever a shortage of food arises.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 9 am when I received two consecutive message notifications on my phone that made me curious to check even though I could not read. I could not quite comprehend its content after checking it up and had to wait for my husband who managed to read, and informed me that it was the message from GiveDirectly that was confirming the receipt of our first transfer. I was so excited and immediately called my helper who withdrew from the nearby shopping center as I had been anticipating this money with all plans on spending lined up.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is the purchase of a large water tank after receiving the first transfer. Even though we had been experiencing drier weather and have not started collecting water using it, I am hopeful to collect enough once the rain starts. This will be useful not only in providing water for my tree nurseries but also cleaner water for our household use as we had been fetching from the dams and rivers where the animals have been stepping on as they drink.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
After the withdrawal of all the amount on the first day after receiving the transfer, we could not sleep but kept aligning all that we had written down as we needed to settle on what will come first. Finally, we came into an agreement with my husband and decided to bring in a large water tank at KES24000. We had been working on tree seedlings projects within our farm that have been giving us an extra income over the past few years. This project needs a lot of water that has always been expensive fetching from rivers since we have always hired riders to supply us with some liters every day. I am glad that this tank will be collecting rainwater from the roof that will be useful in watering our tree nurseries making the cost of operation cheaper. I also needed to purchase new clothing for my husband, my mother-in-law whom we had been staying together in the same house, and also a pair for myself. With the remaining amount, I added to our saving account in preparation to start the renovation of our house. I am planning to repair the old roof and raise it a bit higher with stronger frames after purchasing new iron sheets to replace the rusty ones that are currently on.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money would mean a warmer house and an expanded business for me. I am currently living in a wooden house but the timber used on the walls are hollow and they allow cold to pass through. I would have loved to insulate it from inside but I have nothing left because I spent all my life savings building it. I am also an environmental conservation enthusiast so I usually grow and sell trees but the biggest challenge in this business has been water. I would therefore like to spend KES. 50000 to dig a water well and for the house insulation I will spend the other KES. 55,000.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I have a big tree nursery in this compound and I usually tend to the seedlings in the evening hours by watering and weeding them which gives me a lot of happiness.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship has been lack of enough rainfall here. We have to depend fully on rain to get a harvest but for the past 5 years it has been inadequate and it affects our food security.
