How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My major goal was for me to build a house and also start goat rearing farming, so far I plan to concentrate on the goat rearing project fully, I don't have any other new goal at the moment, I am glad that I was able to plan well thus I m grateful for the support that improved my life.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
The transfer was unconditional, everyone was allowed to use their money unrestrictedly, for that it met the needs of everyone, thus we are grateful that the organization for believing in us, we are grateful for the opportunity that we were given for us to transform our lives, The field officers are very kind, I do not find anything that GiveDirectly did not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When I received my transfer, I used KES 30,000 in building a decent house for my family, this is because the house that I was living in before was small and old, I was unable to build a decent house before due to financial constraints, this is because I am a trained teacher but I have not been absorbed by the government thus what I earn is not enough to sustain all our needs, I then used KES 30,000 in starting a goat rearing project, I had saved the extra KES 7000 from my previous transfer, I am hopeful that with the goat rearing project I would be able to earn an extra income, I am happy that I was able to accomplish my goals in a short time.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The moment I received the money I felt so happy. I remember vividly that it was 9:30 am when I heard a message tone from my phone. When I checked it out I couldn't believe my eyes. There was a message confirming that I have received money from GiveDirectly. I felt so happy and immediately called my spouse to inform her. She was so happy too. I knew I would be able to build a better house. I had always wished to but I didn't had the money. I teach in a private school and the amount of money that I get is so small. I am so happy because GiveDirectly has changed our living standards.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have build a better and spacious house for my family. We used to live in a small house which could not host all my family members well. This was so demoralizing because there was no privacy. Whenever I had visitors there was no space to host them. I could host them outside the house. My relative too had nowhere to spend the night. I had always wished to build a house but I don't had the money to buy the building materials. I depend on casual jobs and and sometimes teach in a private school. The amount of money that I get is so small and was only for household basic needs. I had no extra money to save. Currently I have a decent and spacious house. I no longer stress up on where to host my relatives and friends. My children have a enough space. This has build my self esteem. I no longer shy off to welcome friends to my house. GiveDirectly has changed my living standard. All this could have taken quite some time to be done.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent the money I received from GiveDirectly on building a better and spacious house for my family. We used to live in a small house which could not host all my family members well. I purchased four goats. This is an investment because goats reproduce faster and if helps whenever there is an emergency. Finally I bought food and clothes for my children. I am so grateful for the support.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My dream is to be a livestock farmer. I currently have 2 sheep and intend to use $300 of my transfer to add 10 sheep. Rearing sheep is a good investment because in a year it can reproduce 3 times. This will mean self employment and my family will be able to have a stable income. The remaining amount will be used to renovate and expand our house, buy two calves and buy food and clothes for the household.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the morning when I wake up healthy to go fend bread for my family, I work as a teacher and spend most of my day at school teaching.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship is food security, we have a small piece of land which we depend on for subsistence farming. My location is not favourable for farming since it barely rains and the land is unproductive. Most days I strain to provide food for the family when their is no harvest. My teaching salary is only $40 and not sustainable for my family's needs.
