What did you spend your third transfer on?
I spent my third transfer on paying school fee for my son who is in Makerere university. The son who admired a lot becoming an engineer faced so many challenges on raising his school fees. He missed most of his classes searching for casual jobs to enable him raise the required amount of fee. Other than that, I constructed a house in a new location out of my father's homestead. Luo traditions demanded me to do so since my sons who had already married needed to have their houses in my homestead, not my father's.
How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life has greatly changed. Were it not for the transfers, my son who is soon graduating would not have managed to complete his studies. Similarly, I wouldn't have managed to establish my own homestead.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, I feel that Give Directly chose a better method of sending recipients transfers directly instead of involving third parties. I also appreciate the fact that whatever Give Directly is offering to the recipients is much higher than what the government can offer. On the other hand, I would suggest that the transfers be made continuous to enable us the recipients build a stronger foundation that will sustain us in future.
