How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is currently different in that I now have most of the household goods that I did not have before receiving my transfers. I used part of my transfers to buy items that I did not have for example bed and gas cylinder. I used to stay with a friend and when I received my first transfe,r I used part of it to pay rent and move to my own house. I am now happy since I am independent and can meet my basic needs.
Do you have any new or additional goals for your life?
My new goal is to enroll in one of the polytechnics and pursue plumbing course. I have been depending on casual jobs and the income I get is not enough to meet all my basic needs. After graduating from the polytechnic, I will no longer depend on casual jobs and can earn an income.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used my most recent transfer to pay school fees for my siblings. My parents had not cleared paying their school fees since they depend on casual jobs. I also used part of my transfer to buy household items such as gas cylinder, bedding and pay rent since I was settling in a new house. Before I received my transfer, I was staying with a friend. I saved the remaining amount since I am planning to start a new business where I sell second hand clothes. Currently I am depending on casual jobs and this business will be a source of income to meet my basic needs and pay school fees for my siblings.

Do you have any new goals that you didn't have before receiving the transfer?
The goal I now and have I am really praying hard to achieve it is to open a boutique since it has different varieties of things available under one roof. this will attract more customers since they will be coming knowing that almost all things they need are available in one place and will make them save time and energy wasted going to different places. This kind of business is also promising at Mathare since they are rarely found.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Receiving transfers from GiveDirectly has really changed my life as I now live in my own rented house unlike before and I also have all the necessary items needed in a house. Since I am now depending on myself, I can comfortably buy other things I need as there is enough space when living alone unlike when living in someones house.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Before GiveDirectly came to Mathare, I used to live with my friend and he had already requested me to move out since he was planning to marry. I had paid my house rent five days before receiving my first transfers but could not sleep in it since I did not have anything to use and so I used to sleep my other friends' houses. This prompted me to spend the entire amount in buying beddings and other household necessities so that I could be independent.
Describe the moment when you started receiving transfers. How did you feel?
It was in the morning when I had visited my brother who also lives in Mathare when I received my transfers. The moment I saw a message confirming that I had received them, I was all smiles. I couldn't take the breakfast which was being served as the only thing in my mind was to go and buy all the things I needed in my house. I was so happy for the whole week as the message indicating that I had received money from GiveDirecty was still so fresh in my mind.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
Since the money is kind a less I would prefer putting it in the housing as a new business then they next one start up a boutique then the 3rd one to sustain the two busineses .
Describe your biggest worry.
My top concern is housing/rent because I can barely get money to pay my rent and even if I get the money it's not on time, sometimes am forced to sleep outside(at a friend's house) because was unable to pay rent. I had stayed for 3 months without paying my rent. This made my landlord to lock me out and I was really pissed off. I hope can find a way to generate money to ease my bills.
What are your greatest ambitions?
I would want to be a great business man who supplies like the whole Kenya with clothes. Once I have enough resources can be able to support other young people since there are so many young people within my area who would want to be somewhere in their talents like playing football,i would want to support them.
Describe your usual day. How do you spend your time?
I always stay at the base with my friends relaxing having fun. Sometimes we go to play friendly matches organised by our coach. I also go to help my bigger brother to run a play station shop.
