How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I would like to stop the charcoal production business because it has always made me sick, I get chest pain due to the smoke. I would like to replace it with rearing chicken for commercial purposes. My neighbor does the business and it gives her profits.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
They visit us and educate us on various ways to how to wisely spend the money. Whenever we communicate the staff are polite
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Before the transfer, my family had no house. We only had a tiny kitchen that we used to cook in and in the evening we would put off the fire and lay old clothes and sleep and when it rained we would go to my mother-in-law and camp there until the rain is gone. My husband and I were in charcoal production and the income was not enough to cater to all my family's needs. Receiving this money has helped me build a two-roomed house that cost $300 that my eight children, my husband, and I fit comfortably, bought a television for $100, and paid a school arrear of $30.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
More often, I have prayed and hoped that one-day things will become better and I would be able to build a new house. Although this seemed to have tarried, when I confirmed my transfer, I felt like the hour had come for my life to change. This made me over-excited because I was convinced that I would initiate my project of building a better house. I knew that at long last, my 7 children who had been squeezing themselves into one of the corners of my single-roomed house will finally get a decent place to sleep at. Moreover, they would overcome the challenge of being rained on. Thanks to GiveDirectly.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
In my life, I had been aspiring to own a parcel of land. This seemed unachievable because I did not have a steady source of income. However, with the transfer, I have bought an acre of land and built a decent house in it. I am so glad and I am very grateful to God for this enablement. I have my house which is way better than the previous one. As a result, I feel safer whenever it rains and I am no longer being subjected to extreme cold which initially was a common problem. This is the biggest difference I have experienced in my life.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My husband and I had been depending on making and selling charcoal to earn a living. The proceeds of our labor had been very little thus it could only enable us to buy food for the family without undertaking any development. As a result, we had been living in a small house that is in dilapidated conditions. Its roof leaked and the walls were seriously weakened. This condition made many of our village mates empathize with us. I, therefore, spent KES 13,000 on buying a parcel of land while KES 30,000 helped us to build a new spacious and one bedroomed house. I am glad that now I am in a better house and free from the harsh weather condition. Whenever it rains, I am well-sheltered courtesy of GiveDirectly's transfers.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I am so tired of burning charcoal for a living, I just want to take a breather and start my own business. The little research I have gathered is that the poultry business is idle and manageable even in our region. I plan to put up a structure that can house about 20 chickens. Raise them and sell them for meat purposes. We hardly eat meat and chicken meat can get a lot of customers here. The remaining amount I will use to support my daughter who is joining high school this May. Buy the stationery she needs, pay her admission fee and any other thing she might need.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The moment I heard that GiveDirectly was in our village was the best news I received in years. I am grateful for each day I am alive but the thought of GD in our village and my house is a wish come true. I see myself as a businesswoman, with a renovated and spacious house and her child admitted to high school.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Four seasons have passed without us harvesting anything from our farms. First came COVID-19 crippled our livelihood then drought. Life seems to be getting harder. This being a forest food is scarce. Previously we would rely on farm produce, maize, and cassava but now nothing is available. Our rivers are drying out and the little water left is for domestic use and our livestock. The eight children I have to feed daily caused me to have sleepless nights, just worrying of where our next meal will come from.
