Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was busy doing my normal household chores like sweeping the compound. It was at noon when my son had come home from a school where he worked as a PTA teacher. He informed me that I had received my transfer after checking my phone. I felt very happy and relieved since I had received the transfer that would change my life for the better.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I am now a happy parent after clearing my children school fees as well as helping my kids to join the teacher college. I am very grateful for the transfer. If not for the transfer My kid would be still at home.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 38000 to support my children's education by paying the fee arrears in secondary school. They completed their secondary last year but it was impossible to get their certificates because of the fees arrears. Currently, one of them joined the Kaguma teachers college pursuing a mathematics and IT course. In addition, I purchased a bed and mattress for KES 5,500 since I was using a traditional bed and sacks which was not comfortable. I also bought 2 goats for KES 6,000 a reliable source of income that will help me in any financial emergency that might arise. The remaining amount assisted me in acquiring sufficient food for the family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Restoring my dignity by constructing a decent house is what receiving this money means to me. Currently, I live in a small grass-thatched house that is leaking during rainy season. At the same time, I fear hosting my visitors because it's not spacious and this has forced me to postponed any appointment. With the cash grant from GiceDirectly, I plan to spend a better portion of the first transfer ($400) to construct a spacious Iron-roofed house for my family. The remaining amount will help me to support my children's education with 100 dollars and also to buy 3 indigenous dairy cows to act as my store of wealth that will aid in catering for our future needs.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I spend the better part of my day at home doing most of the household chores like fetching water and cooking. Also sometimes, I do farm work. In the evening I get relaxed in my bed. This is the time when I feel re-energized for the next day's activities and hence, the happiest part of my day.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My husband and I have struggled a lot in ensuring our children get settled in school. The efforts to get money that can support them sometimes fail due to lack of reliable sources of income and this has affected their performances. Since I am a housewife and my husband is a casual labourer, his earning is hardly enough to cater all our needs. Therefore, the lack of a stable source of income becomes the biggest hardship in my life.
