How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
If I get money, I plan to pay school fees for my children and also cultivate more land. But at the moment, I do not have any new goals due to inadequate resources. Above all, I am grateful for the tremendous support that boosted my finances.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I am forever grateful and happy that I was able to build a decent house with my initial transfer. It's a dream come true and my source of inspiration is that good people do exist. The unconditional transfer significantly changed our lives for the better. GiveDirectly does work diligently with high standards of integrity therefore, I have not witnessed any inefficiencies.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
It was my first time handling such a huge amount of money. Words can not explain the immense joy that I felt. This is because I was certain that I would be able to lift my living standards. I am a mother of eight children and I depend on consistent farming to earn a livelihood. School fees have been a major challenge that I have been dealing with. My children are in secondary school yet my source of income is not enough to cater for all our needs. Therefore upon the receipt of my second transfer, I prioritised paying school worth KES 14,000. Secondly, Since farming is our main source of income I used 10,000 on tilting and planting maize crops. Lastly, I bought a goat to initiate a goat-rearing project. All this would not have been achieved if I did not receive money from GiveDirectly thus I am relieved and grateful.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 6 am while lighting a fire in the fireplace for cooking breakfast. That's when I heard my phone ring and on checking, I confirmed to have received KES 55,000 from GiveDirectly. I was very happy and withdrew the money after two days.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Building an Iron roofed house is the biggest difference since I received the transfers. This has led to us accessing clean rainwater. Additionally, my daughters no longer borrow a place to sleep.
Secondly, the transfers have enabled us to buy bean seeds and plow land using a tractor. All these we could not afford before due to poor earnings from daily casual labor.
Additionally, my kids are now healthy and happier because they have access to adequate food. Unlike before when we used to eat little or no food due to the availability of casual labor.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a mother of seven and usually work as a casual laborer in the second-hand clothes business only during market days to feed my family. Additionally, to pay fees and buy clothing we rely on farming maize and beans.
Recently, when I received my transfers I spent KES 31,000 on the purchase of construction materials and the building of a 24 Iron roofed house. This is because before I only had a tiny grass-thatched built over two years. Due to its tiny nature, my four daughters were forced to sleep in the neighborhood.
Secondly, I spent KES 5,000 plowing an acre of land and planting bean seeds. This will be a source of food for my family during the next harvest season.
Thirdly, spent KES 3,500 on a bag of maize. This has helped reduce household food expenses. This is because earlier I used to buy food from casual labor income which was only up to KES 150 on a good day. Since I bought the bag of maize using the transfers my family is well-fed and the remainder can sustain us for the next two weeks.
Similarly, I spent KES 2,000 on clothing for my kids. These are more decent than the ones we normally buy.
Lastly, I bought a goat at KES 5,000. This will come in handy during school fees payment because it reproduces fast.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have been wishing to have a better bigger house but I have not been able to build one because of a lack of finances. I currently live in one grass-thatched house which is not only small but it is also getting old. Whenever I have visitors around, I do not have space to accommodate which makes me feel ashamed. Even my children, do not have space to sleep, they are forced to borrow accommodation from the neighbors which makes me feel like I have failed as a parent. I plan to use KES 50,000 to construct a two-bedroom wooden house. For the rest of the amount, I will construct a shop at the corner of my farm so it could be giving me income.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Two months ago, my son who is in secondary school had saved up some money and bought two goats. This made me very happy as a parent as I can see I'm raising a very responsible and hardworking son. In the next few years, he will be having many goats.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest challenge I have now is a lack of finances. I have seven children in school which weighs me a lot providing for them and paying their school fees. These responsibilities have made me not been able to save money to build a better house all these years. I solely depend on farming as the main source of income which is unsustainable due to fluctuating weather conditions.
