How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I hope to raise enough cash so that I will be able to send all my children to school. I desire to see them get betta er education for the sake of their tomorrow and generations. Also, I trust that once they graduate and grab good jobs, they will be able to eradicate the prolonged poverty that has stricken our household.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly does well in almost the whole region making sure that no one was left out provided they were all from the same village. Also, the officers treated us with maximum respect hence there was smooth operation throughout their stay in our village. I can't mention anything that went astray or deserves attention.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent $90 of my second transfer on paying fees for my two children in secondary schools; in form two and three respectively. As a parent, it has been stressing me also whenever they are at home as a result of the arrears. I, therefore, feel relieved and thankful because they will no longer be sent home for the entire semester. To add to that, I had to buy a mattress and bedsheets. Which were to replace the old ones which were torn. I used to experience sleepless nights which was a result of the nature of my bedding. I currently can't complain since I have been sleeping in a better place which has led to the relaxation of my mind. Also, I bought three mats which I will purposely be used by visitors as sits. I no longer have to borrow those of my neighbours since it was quite embarrassing. With the remaining amount, I bought food for my twelve family members. I am glad that we can afford to take at least two meals a day courtesy of GiveDirecetly. This has made my children to be healthy and active in school.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The moment I received my transfer, I can vividly recall that it was in the evening when I was at home relaxing. I heard the neighbour's discussion about the receipt of their initial transfer. Unfortunately, my phone was off. I had to wait until the next day. Upon switching on my phone, I saw a text message showing that I had I received money from GiveDirectly. This was the best news that I had received in a long time, It was so refreshing. I was overwhelmed with joy because I knew that I would be able to accomplish a lot. We embarked on planning how we would utilise the money.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I was able to renovate the roof of my house to a decent one. I could have renovated it earlier but this was not possible due to financial challenges. I am so happy that finally, I have achieved the goal. Secondly, I am happy and contented that I was able to clear the school fees arrears for my children, meaning that they can concentrate on their studies without any hiccups. I am forever indebted for the wonderful gift that lifted my life amazingly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Receiving money from GiveDirectly was like a dream come true. It came at the right time of need because I needed to settle the school fees arrears of my children. Upon receiving my transfer, I opted to pay school fees of KES 23,000 for my children. This is because I was unable to pay it before due to financial constraints. I am a farmer and my husband is a charcoal vendor, together we are blessed with eleven children, though at the moment only nine are still under our care because two of them got married. I then used KES 15,000 on renovating the roof of my house which was worn out but, I was not in a position to replace it before due to financial constraints. Lastly, I used the remaining amount of the transfer on buying foodstuffs. I am so grateful for the support that lifted our living standards amazingly.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
We have been blessed with eleven children. The two elder ones are married. My husband and I have been left with nine children to take care of. The burden of responsibility is so huge. We have to cater to their food, school fees, clothing, and shelter. This money will be split accordingly to fit into all these needs. I cannot express how happy I am. Thank you, Give Directly.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Three months back, I sold all the chickens I had. This money enabled me to top up and buy four goats. I am happy because they keep me busy. I hope to sell some during the festive season and make good returns.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Schools are out on the break. That is some relief. The reality of the matter though, we have to think about how to pay the children's fees once school resumes. We at least have some food but the money for other needs is elusive.
