What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent a large portion of my second transfer on buying a second-hand motorbike worthy KES 45000. This is what I have been longing to own specifically for my son. Previously he was employed by a friend and paid at the commission. Whatever he was earning was too little to sustain our needs since he is the breadwinner. I also bought two beds which were to replace the traditional beds that we have been using. Ther reaming amount I bought some foodstuffs and some other household needs
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly did so well in almost every sector. one there was some fairness and the organization kept its promise by sending us money as promised. In our village, most of our living standardso9 have improved. There is nothing that they did not do well
How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is now different because I managed to purchase some heifers from financial help. This is what I have been praying to own for so kong because I always depend on farming activities. I feel there is a big relief now because I will no longer be hiring those of my neighbor like I used to do. This will make me save the money and sort some other expenses. I will also be hiring them to my neighbors and generate an income that will boost my living standard. If it were not for GiveDirectly, I wold not have achieved all these.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I remember being awakened by the loud vibration from my mobile phone. Out of curiosity, I decided to check it's content to find out what the message was all about. Upon checking, I realized that it was an Mpesa message from GiveDirectly. I was so happy and without wasting time, I started planning on how I could utilize it.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I spent part of my first transfer on buying an ox and a dairy cow. It has been my desire to keep them in my homestead but then, I could earn a little amount of money that deprived me of achieving this goal. I feel happy for once having them under my ownership. I then bought beddings such as a mattress and a bed. Previously, I was using the traditional bed made of ropes. I was always complaining of painful back pains. It was so stressful and the worst part is having sleepless nights. Additionally, clearing bills from the local shop where I used to take some foodstuffs on credit was my next course of action that has really changed the perspective that people had. I also cleared school fees for my children so that they could study without being bothered with the issue of school fees. I am finally using the remaining amount in buying foodstuff.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I now own a pair of oxen that I bought after receiving financial support from GD. I believe and hope that they will be of great help in ploughing my farm since the pair can take fewer days to clear an acre as compared to tilling by myself. With this plan in place, I will get an increased harvest from the previous ones. Apart from that, I will also hire them to my neighbors at a fee and get an income to help me sustain my family needs without straining. The other advantage is getting manure which will make my farms to be more productive.

What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Besides subsistence farming, burning charcoal is my other source of income. The much I earn is 350 shillings in 2 weeks. This amount is supposed to cater for all our needs including food, medical and school fees. However, it is not enough making it difficult to provide for my children. It is common for us to go without food and they are often sent home for fees. This situation makes me consider financial constraint as my biggest hardship.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Waking up healthy and full of energy makes me happy. This gives me motivation to work hard regardless of all the challenges. Such a feeling makes morning the happiest part of my day.
What does receiving this money mean to you?
Early this year I lost my pair of oxen due to illness. This came as a big blow because these animals were of great importance to my family. I used to till 8 acres of land that could produce up to 15 bags in a good season. Besides, I also hired them to my neighbours to generate income. Currently I have reduced farming by half and the much I can produce is 6 bags of maize. This has negatively impacted my family since we have to buy food from the shop yet we do not have enough money to sustain it. Therefore, I plan to buy another pair that will revive my economic status to it's previous state. In addition, I will purchase 2 dairy that will produce milk for sale as well as family use.
