In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly does well by helping the needy in the society. I am beneficiary of the transfer and it has helped me clear some problems that I have been going through. I have lived in poverty for the better part of my life and I now have an opportunity through the funds to uplift my life and live a decent and pleasant life.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Three days before receiving the transfer, my grandchildren came home due to school fees arrears. Their parents did not have money to send them back to school and had to stay at home to wait until they raised the required amount for them to go back to school. Their father is currently jobless and mainly depends on manual jobs, which are not daily. The amount of money he earns from the jobs is just enough to feed his family and nothing is left for him to save. When I received the transfer, I spent KSH 1800 to pay for the three children who are in primary school to go back to school and study since they were almost sitting for their end of term exam. To stop them from losing a lot by staying at home, I saw it wise to clear their school fees arrears so that they would resume their studies. They used the remaining amount to buy food. For the children to concentrate fully in class, they need to eat something and that motivated me to buy some food in bulk to sustain us for some period as we thought of other ways to get money and add to the food stock.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I received the text message that I had received the money from GiveDirectly at around 8 am in the morning. I was in the cowshed tending to the goats. I received the notification and when I looked at my phone I confirmed that indeed I had received the money. I was very happy since I needed money at that time.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The money has made a big difference in my life. My health was deteriorating day by day.  With no one to provide for my family, food in the house was quickly running out. I am very happy that with the money I was able to kill two birds with one stone. I bought food and also got medication and now I am feeling better and I can go out and find some job so that I can take care of my family.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I received a total of KSH 1200 from GiveDirectly. Two weeks before receiving the cash I got very sick and I could not go out to find food for myself. The food that was in my house was almost getting finished. I was getting stressed since I had no means of getting money to take care of myself and my family too. When I received the cash, I spent KSH 850 in buying food for my family and me I. the money had come at the right time. I also spent KSH 350 buying medicine. The medicine I bought has helped me recover and now I am slowly improving health-wise.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I am a widow, blessed with only one son. He did not make it to school after the death of his father. Being uneducated, he has no formal source of income. At my age, I cannot help my son to provide, something that has made us live in poverty. A times, we go without food. The transfers will help me support my son in providing for us.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I feel very happy when I hear that a visitor is coming our way. I love visitors so much.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My dear husband died at an early age, few years after marriage. I surely did not enjoy the union. This made me struggle to raise my two children after being denied access to some of the inheritance from my husband. It hurts that despite the riches my husband left behind, my children could not keep up with school. The pain I went through is not something I would wish for any woman.
