How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Upon completion of the original goal I had at the time of enrollment, I developed a new goal of supporting my children's education. I have begun saving part of my transfers and other income with an intention to use them to pay off my children's school fees. Through this, my two children in secondary school will be able to succeed in their academic pursuit. Paying their fees on time will help them to have ample time in school and this could register an improvement in their performance. I am hopeful that when they succeed, they will be of help to their younger siblings in primary school.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly does so well in supporting vulnerable communities. It has been issuing direct cash to such communities, an act of kindness that has positively impacted every household. By enrolling households in the program, there has been a lot of peace, understanding and unity among household members, an experience that was least witnessed in the past. Personally, I have not witnessed what GiveDirectly does not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 34,000 from my most recent transfer to pay off all the school fee arears for my two children in secondary school. I am glad since then, they have been able to learn so well with minimal interruptions. Consequently, I have not witnessed any case of my children being sent home due to school fee this term as it was the norm in the previous years. I, as well spent KES 10,000 to buy 3 goats which unfortunately died. I am still hopeful that I shall begin to raise new flock of goats.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was extremely happy for receiving my transfer and I had conceal my days plan to prepare to travel to the Mpesa shop to withdraw my transfer. My children had been sent home due to fee arrears and I was confused on what to do. I remember it was around 7 O'clock when I was in my house preparing breakfast for my 2 children when I heard loud message notifications on my phone. I called my elder son who confirmed that it was the transfer from GiveDirectly, we both celebrated and thank the organization for fulfilling its promises.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in daily life is that I am now leading a stress-free life after completing the payment of team one fees for my children. They had been staying at home for almost one week due to the huge fee balance something that kept me worried about the future of my children. I thank GiveDirectly for the transfer that came at the right time when we need them most. I am currently confident that they will have a bright future.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
With 2 children in school, one in college taking teaching course and the other in the secondary level. I have been struggling to educate them especially in paying their fees they were often send home due to fee arrears. I am a charcoal vendor, a job that earns me utmost KES 3000 per month. I invested KES 44000 of my transfer on their education by giving the KES 22000 each to clear the fees. I am confident that my children will learn without being sent home due to fee issues. I also boost my goats rearing by purchasing two more goats at KES 2500 each this is because it was not stable because I had sold most of them children education. I bought enough food stock for the family with the remaining amount of the transfer.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means proper education for my children. I'll use the transfer to pay my children's school fees. My son completed secondary school in 2020 but he is yet to pick his results from the school because of a pending fee balance of 300 Dollars. Getting his results from the school will enable him join a teacher's training college to pursue his dream of becoming a primary school teacher. My daughter too completed primary school in 2020. I'm planning to use part of this transfer to take her to secondary school. Doing this will make me happy and I will gain the peace of mind I have always desired.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the morning. Waking up alive and healthy makes me happy as I start a new day.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship in my life is lack of enough money to pay for my children's school fees. I've always desired to educate my children as I believe education is the only thing that can drive us out of poverty.
