How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I hope to raise sufficient cash so that I can be able to finance my son's education at the university. Since he is my only child who managed to go to university, I wouldn't wish to see him drop out of school due to the tuition fees. I believe that I will fulfil this, thereby empowering him to accomplish his dream as well. It will now be his turn to help me, which is my daily prayer.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly did so well in my entire region, which was evident from the assets that most of us own. No one was discriminated against or left out, regardless of their tribe or even religion. The enrollment process was also free and voluntary. This makes the organization look so unique because it has never happened before. I therefore would prefer that they continue serving the beneficiaries of the other villages just as they did to us.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my second transfer taking my son to the university. He graduated from secondary school last year, but he was forced to stay home due to insufficient funds. Seeing him at home has been very frustrating for me, and I feel like I have failed as a parent. I can't thank the organization enough for finally enabling my son to fulfill his dream. He is now in school, and I am praying to God to see him through all four years. Also, I am planning to build a pit latrine. For all that time, I have been using my brother's because I felt it was not hygienic and we deserved privacy. I am glad this was also a success, and we no lfulfilhare like we used to do, which has enhanced hygiene. Finally, I have been using the remaining amount of money to buy food for my three children. At least they are now healthy since they have been eating a balanced diet.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was in the evening at around 5 pm while I was fetching some firewood. On returning home, I heard my neighbors saying they had received their first transfers. Since I do not know how to read, I asked my helper to check whether I had also received mine since we were registered on the same day. Upon checking, he informed me that I had received $550 from GiveDirectly. I was overjoyed for receiving the money and I allulated in happiness for receiving a huge amount of money at once in my life.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Initially, I used to cook food in an open place. During the rainy season, it was very hectic and challenging since I had to pause at different intervals for the rain to subside. As of now, I have a nice cooking place unlike before. I also managed to keep some money for my son to commence his academic journey and used the remaining amount for family needs.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon receiving the money, I first opted to save $200 for my son who completed his primary school level and will be joining secondary school. I did this because I want him to have a smooth transition from primary school to secondary. This will help him to concentrate in school. I also built a kitchen. I bought 7 pieces of iron sheets and building poles for $63 and $75 respectively. The kitchen will be of great help to me, especially during the rainy season. Thereafter, I bought two goats and a hen for $64. For the remaining amount, I bought some food since it was a dry season.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
My Child Peter is about to join Pwani university next year 2022. I cannot tell exactly what he is going to study because I am illiterate. The fee structure shows that he is supposed to pay $750 per academic year. I will use $750 to pay his school fees so that he can start his studies. I will also use $ 200 to buy four goats as an investment. This will help me in case of any emergency because right now I have no any investment. I am happy for Give directly organization for your program for bringing hope into my life. Some of the community members had sidelined me because I am paralyzed. This really discourages me.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I have three children all are boys. The first two never got to secondary school due to financial constraints. The third boy got the sponsorship and made it through. On June 2022, he got a calling letter to join Pwani university. He has gone beyond the odds. Despite my situation, I am happy for my child to get a calling letter from University. He will be the source of change in my family and I am praying for him day and night.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I am a single mother of three children and also living with my mother. When I was young, I suffered from polio which left my left arm paralyzed. I have a challenge working with one arm. As a mother, I must work and give quality education to my children. My health issues has restricted me from working and as a result, I find it hard to get school fees for my son who is about to join university early next year. His secondary school education was sponsored by the Ganze sub-county education funds program. The program is no longer their since the leadership has changed. He did his final examination on March 2022.
