How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
After utilizing the second transfer, I developed another goal of ensuring a good education for my children. Since education is the backbone of the Kenyan economy, I am aiming to ensure that my children do not drop out of school due to school fees. If I get the money I will invest it in their academics.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly did a commendable and noble deed that I have never seen since birth. Giving people a huge amount of money to plan for themselves was a miracle. Personally, if it were not for GiveDirectly I would not have managed to build the house I have nor retain my children in school.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon withdrawing the money, the first thing I had planned was to construct a house since the one I had was in a bad condition and thus unworthy of dwelling in. I bought the construction materials such as rafters, poles, iron sheets, and nails. I cannot clearly state the cost of the construction because it has been a while since I used the money. I also paid some school fees for my primary school children and saved the remaining amount for family use.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was out looking for the daily casual jobs that have been my source of livelihood. However, I was not successful in getting one that morning. While relaxing, I received a message on my phone at around 9 AM. When I read the message to confirm who the sender was, I realized I had received my first transfer from GiveDirectly. I felt happy and went back home as I hoped things to change the next day.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The transfer has enabled me to fulfil the most important thing that I needed for a long time; a spacious iron-roofed house. My previous house roof was built using coconut tree leaves which are not long-lasting. I had to replace it every month. I thank GiveDirectly because I am now sheltering in my new iron-roofed house, which so far is the biggest difference in my daily life. Even my children can now boast of a real home unlike before. My menial jobs would not have been enough to enable me to save enough money for building a decent iron-roofed house.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent a bigger portion of my first transfer on building a spacious iron-roofed house. The previous house was not spacious enough and its roof was dilapidated. I used coconut tree leaves as roofing materials. These materials do not last long and I had to replace them from time to time which is tiresome. I thus purchased enough building materials which include 24 pieces of iron sheets, building poles and nails to facilitate the construction. I am grateful to GiveDirectly because I am now sheltering in my new iron roofed house. Apart from this, I also paid KES 2000 for my five children's school fees. They had stayed at home for almost a week because I could not pay for them on time. I am glad they were allowed to continue with their studies after paying. I spent the remaining amount on buying clothes for my children and also foodstuffs. I depend on subsistence farming to provide food for my family but due to a prolonged drought, I did not harvest much. I thank GiveDirectly because I have been able to buy enough cereals that can serve us for a whole month.

Receiving this money means I will build a one bedroom house which will cost me 200 dollars, I want to purchase two oxen which I will use to plough my land which will cost me 300 dollars , I want to take my daughter for a medical operation because she has been having a growth in her reproductive system which needs more than 65 dollars and the rest I will buy food for my family and pay school fees for my children.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My happiest part of the day is in the evening. This is when I am with my family enjoying dinner together, then I count the day successfull. This is the time I am happy most.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My biggest problem is hunger and taking care of my family especially when we do not harvest- I have been starving since last year! I do not have food to feed the family .I depend on tapping Palm wine and the money I get is not enough to carter for the family daily meals.
