What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my second transfer on buying four goats worthy of KES 12000. These will now be the living assets that I can rely on in case of any financial hardships. Before the coming of GiveDirectly, I was not in a position to purchase any. To add to that, I was able to build a new house for my two children who have been sleeping at their friend's house. As a parent, this used to frustrate me and at times I could feel I had failed them as their mother. I also cleared the school fees for my two children who are in secondary schools. They have been always been sent home regularly and they could stay for weeks which affected their performance. With the remaining amount of money, I bought foodstuffs for my family that would take us to the next harvesting season.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
According to me, GiveDirectly has been doing a great job in my entire village. First, during the enrolment period, there was no discrimination at all in matters of tribe and religion. Every targeted household was enrolled fairly and voluntarily. What stood out was the unconditionality part, we had all the freedom to choose how to use the cash. This has enabled the majority of us to spend all our children at school which has been the dream of every parent in the village.
How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
No, I did not have any new goals since the one that I had which was to construct a new house, was achieved. My previous one was almost collapsing and I was so worried that I would be left homeless. I am so grateful because it would take ages for me to accomplish this.

What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
The house I built is the one that took a huge part of my transfer. I spent a total of KES20000 for materials and labour charges because the house I was living in was in a very poor condition and was barely shielding us from extreme weather condition especially when it rains, though rarely but we would spend the whole night awake and being rained on when it does. I am now happy that I have a new and better house that will always keep us safe whether it rains or not. I, also, spent KES10000 to buy a bed and a mattress because I used to sleep on the floor which was very uncomfortable and not good for health but I could hardly do anything about it, so when I got this money I used part of it to address that challenge and I am now grateful that I got a bed and a mattress. I am now sleeping comfortably, I am so happy and grateful.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my life is the fact that I have been able to progress from sleeping on the floor and spending the whole night awake while being rained on when it rains, to now not having to worry about whether it rains or not and sleeping on a bed and a mattress very comfortably. I am so happy and grateful, thanks to GiveDirectly.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was so happy the moment I got the money because at least I had gotten a great thing to help me with the challenges that needed to be addressed and I am so impressed by this program of GiveDirectly. It is not easy to just get this kind of assistance, so I was very happy and grateful when I got the money.

What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My biggest hardship is luck of money in life. My husband died in 2011 and I depend on my elder son who has 2 children in secondary school and his motorcycle job cannot feed the house and also attend other needs. This is the main reason I am living in a house like this.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My happiest part of the day is in the evening when I am enjoying our supper with my grand children and joking. This time I am happy because I am resting from my tedious charcoal burning work, eating and joking with my grand children.
What does receiving this money mean to you?
My house is falling and I know the long rains are very near! Receiving this money means I will build a new house for me and my grandchildren because this house is very small and old. It was built by my deceased husband more than 15 years ago.
