How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
New goal is to be able to accumulate enough money to buy livestock as an investment for my children's education. Our children are still in primary and by the time they will be in their secondary education we shall be able to pay their school fees without much struggle. It has always been my prayer to be able to give them in terms of education so that they will be able to live a better life than the life that we as their parents are living. We also have plans of buying a piece of land in case we get money in the nar future. We are living in a very small piece of land where it is even difficult to practice the most basic agricultural activities which would raise our living standards as a family.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion GiveDirectly did very well by giving people money and giving all of us an opportunity to make decisions on how best we could spend our money. Everyone had their own needs and had they forced us to spend the money on one thing then it would not have been of maximum benefit to some people. We are so grateful for this.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
We used KES 15000 to buy a young heifer and used another KES 13000 to cement the floor of our house. We then used another KES 14000 to buy a water tank and the remaining amount of KES 8000 was used to buy food, clothes , fertilizers and seeds for planting. The decision to buy a heifer was to make sure that we have an nvestment that will help us in the nar future to pay school fees for our two children and meet other familys expenses. Our home's floor too was mud made and it was getting hard to maintain it each adnd everytime hence the decision to cment it. Our home is not more comfortable and the entire family is happy. As for the tank, we used to travel for far and long distances in search of water and this was consuming a lot of our time. The tank shall bring to an end the endless shortage of water and give us aple time to be able to engage in other family's activities that will improve our livelihood.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I had just finished having breakfast when at 9 a.m, I heard my phone beep. On checking it, I was delighted to see the message indicating that I had received the transfer from GiveDirectly. Words can not describe how happy I felt, knowing that I could finally finish the construction of my house.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
It's an amazing feeling to see my newly, completed modern house. Before receiving this transfer, I had begun its construction but had to stop because of a lack of money. Even though I work as an ECD teacher, I was sent on unpaid leave due to the COVID-19 pandemic. I simply could not afford to spend money on building a house. Receiving this transfer, however, has enabled me to complete its construction. I'm happy that all four of us have a comfortable place to lay our heads.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I was happy to receive this transfer from GiveDirectly because I had started the construction of a new house for my family a few months before. I, however, could not afford to finish its construction because of a lack of money. I work as an ECD teacher. Sadly, I have been on unpaid leave for a while now, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. So I spent KES 40,000 on the necessary material and labour to complete the construction of our home. Since we did not own any furniture, I also spent KES 13,000 on buying three new chairs.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I was happy when I heard from our village elder that GiveDirectly were coming to our village. We have, for a long time, heard about their work and the impact that we have seen is great. I hope that if I become one of those who will receive it, I will use some amount from the transfer to buy a cow. I do not own one and buy milk from my neighbor. It is not enough for my family because I have two little children who really need milk. If I buy a cow I will be able to provide enough milk for my children. I will also use some amount to plaster my house (outside walls) for it to last long because when it rains, the water washes away the clay that I use on the walls.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I always feel happy in the morning because I get to see my children up and ready to go to school and the little one active.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
When I got married, I was promised by my husband that once I get here, he will enroll me for a diploma course. I had dreams of being a teacher and I have not yet accomplished it. Him being the sole provider also tends to weigh him down and I would love to support him. So achieving this dream will mean that I could get a job as a teacher, be paid and being able to support him where necessary.
