How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
So far I do not have any other new goal apart from the one that I had which was to renovate my house. I am so happy that this was accomplished in good time. Initially, it has some holes all over the walls which could affect my children at night. Also, I was so worried that it might collapse in the future. I am living peacefully with my children without any worries.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly has been doing a very great job not only in my household but for the entire village. Their plan to give offer help in form of cash transfers is the best decision that I will always be thankful for. This is because I was able to utilize it according to my desires. On the other hand, I do not see any negative action they have done so far in our villages that need a change.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my second transfer on buying bags of cement, bricks, and gravel at a total of KES 30000. The main aim was to renovate my house which was a semi-permanent one. The wall was very weak and even at night children complaint of the cold which penetrated through the holes. This has been affecting their health and they were always on and off in hospital. There is relief now since this is all resolved. I also bought a new bed and a mattress at KES 17000. I no longer complain about the pains that I have been through while sleeping on earth. To add to that, I bought new plastic chairs at 2400 and this has restored my dignity since I used to borrow those from friends whenever I have a visitor. With the remaining amount of money,y I bought foodstuffs for my family and other household items.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was in my house busy doing my household chores, cleaning my utensils. I received a message alert on my phone. I called my helper to interpret it to me since I am illiterate. I was very happy for receiving my transfer since I had eagerly waited for it to transform my life for the better .
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my ly life is that I am living a happy and fulfilling life. Currently, I am sleeping comfortably on modern beddings with my family. In addition, I am able to meet my needs especially get enough food for the family without much struggling.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 12000 to purchase one lorry of building stone and cement. This was for renovating my house since it was collapsing something very risky to my family members. I constructed pillars to the house to strengthen it so that it was more permanent. I also spent 17,000 to purchase a bed and mattress this is because I was using a traditional bed and sacks as bedding which was uncomfortable to sleep on. I also purchase a sack of maize and 2 bundles of flour which is enough food for a whole month for my family. Lastly, I bought 3 plastic chairs for KES 1800, before I was using logs as chairs it was embarrassing especially when I received important guests in my house.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means a safer and secure structure for me. Due to lack of financial resources, I ended up building a house without strong pillars. For the past two years, I have feared that my house will collapse on me during the rainy seasons. This money will now enable me to purchase building stones and cement, roughly at a cost of 30000 shillings. I will then feel safe going forward.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest happy of my day is in the afternoon. Irregardless of the mental illness of my two grandchildren, they chill during the afternoon hours and this makes me happy because at least I can go ahead and do my household chores in peace.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My biggest challenge is mental health of my two grandchildren who have been sick for three years now. It breaks my heart seeing them in the same situation year in year out without having anything to help them. I would have loved to see them go to school and get employment like other children from my neighborhood.
