How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is different than how it would have been because I am now a proud farmer courtesy of GiveDirectly. I have been depending on casual jobs and farming to earn a living. However, during the planting season, I was always forced to use my own hands to do the exercise which was tiring and I could even fail to utilize the whole of my farm. During that period, I could not afford to hire these iof my frogs because it was too expensive. All has suddenly changed now becasue, through the bulls, I can timely prepare my farms and plough so many acres in a short period which is a relief time. Also, the fact that I managed to clear the fees to my children in college who were to sit for their final exams makes the biggest difference as well.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly does well in all the sectors becasue, the staff made sure we were all well informed about the security of our money once we receive it. They provided us great teachings that helped most of us and in that process, the theft cases concerning the money were so rare.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my second transfer on buying a dairy cow at KES 18000, this will act as security just in case of any financial constraints. In addition, I purchased an ox plough KES 7000 for my oxen which I had initially bought using the first transfers. Later on, I cleared school fees areas for my two children who were to sit fr their final exams in college. With the money that had remained, I bought utensils borrowing those of my neighbors like before and enough food for the family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was in a family meeting when I heard my phone ringing. I decided to check who it could be. Only to realize it was an Mpesa message from GiveDirectly I felt so happy and I even could not concentrate on the discussion with the rest.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Having have cleared the huge college fees for my two children has brought the biggest difference in my life. Before the coming of GiveDirectly, I used to strain so hard in making sure I get their fees on time simply because I never wanted them to miss school. Unfortunately, this was not achievable most of the time because I did not have a permanent job but only depend on the casual ones. Sometimes they could be sent home and take long before they could resume back which was really affecting their academic performance. Being the final year and semester it was stressful becasue they were to sit for a very crucial exam and I had no coin in my pocket. But again God was on my side because he brought GiveDirectly into my life at the right time. I am so glad and ambitious because they are at school and studying without any disturbances.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my first transfer on clearing the huge college fees balance for my two children who are in their final year. I later bought some building materials such as sand, bricks, and bags of cement. This was for the renovation of my house which was not permanent. It's now decent and good looking. Also, I bought enough foodstuffs for the Christmas celebrations and good clothes fr my children as well. All they could say is that it will be one of the memorable Christmas.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
It is the desire of every parent to see their children prosper in the lives. I have two children who are doing electrical engineering, sometimes they forced to return home and spend like a month due to lack of school fees. I have never wished my children to suffer in their education life but due to our poor life condition it forces them to suffer a lot. Receiving this money means I will be able to clear their school fees debt whereby I will use 80,000 Kenya shillings to clear their arreas so that they can continue with their training. The remaining amount will be used for our daily needs such as food and clothing.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Evening is the happiest part of my day because this is the time I relax and spend more time with my family while taking our meals.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
As a charcoal vendor I usually use my small bicycle to sell the charcoal at different places. The income I get per month is 6,000 Kenya shilling which is very little according to my family's needs.I incur high cost of licensing my business thus, I find it very difficult to save for the family. Therefore business insecurity is the biggest hardship in my life.
