How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is currently different from how it was in that, I have paid dowry. My wife is legally mine. My parents in law had been pressurizing me to the extent of sending me messages and endless phone calls to pay dowry being that I had stayed with their daughter for six and a half years without actualizing this process. I had promised them twice but failed due to lack of money. I am glad that I am free and at peace after paying dowry using part of my first and second transfer. Nowadays I don't dread receiving their calls. When they call we hold normal conversations without issues of dowry coming up. Thanks to Give directly for saving my Image. I don't know where I could have gotten the money to settle the debt.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Give Directly is doing a good job. The idea of helping out people by giving unconditional cash transfer has changed our lives. For instance, our village has changed in that of my neighbours have improved their standards of living by achieving goals that they could have not managed before the transfer like buying cattle and building houses.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I had used my first transfer on paying dowry but I did not finish the process. Due to the pressure from my in-law, I had to complete paying the dowry. I am grateful because I am now at peace with my parents in- law and my wife after completing the payment with part of the second transfer. I have stayed with my wife for three and a half years without paying the dowry; this was embarrassing because whenever her parents to check on us this topic could always come up in our conversation. I felt that it was the right time to finish this process and make my wife also be proud of her self like other women in our village. I also bought clothes for my three children. It was a festive season and my children had to look decent and finally paid their school fees so as to allow them to settle well in school for the new term.
