How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I now have a new decent and iron roofed house to live with my family. It would have taken me many years to build a bigger and spacious house considering my lowly financial status. The previous house was in a very bad condition, it was leaking during rains. I am not worried anymore when it rains because I have a good house to live in. Apart from this, I also have a pair of oxen that will help me in doing my farming productively.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, I feel GiveDirectly does well in changing the lives of many since we could not enjoy the very basic needs like accessing good houses and even paying for our children's school fees. After receiving the financial support, we were able to improve our lives by building decent houses which to some seemed impossible. I do not see anything that GiveDirectly does not do well.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I had began building a new house using my first transfer but the materials were not enough to finish this project. When I received my second transfer, I spent it on purchasing the remaining building materials which include iron sheets and timber for roofing. My house is now completed. I also paid the labour cost at KES 17000. Apart from this, I also cleared the medical bills for my children. Lastly, I paid for my children's school fees for them to comfortably continue with their studies.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
I had no oxen to plough my land so as to obtain better harvests for we mainly depend on subsistence farming. I was previously cultivating a smaller acreage for I could not afford the cost of hiring. Through the GiveDirectly transfer, then I acquired a pair. Through the pair, I will be able to cultivate a bigger acreage to increase food production for my family. To me, this is the biggest difference in my daily life.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was woken up by a message notification early in the morning. when I checked to confirm who the sender was, I was filled with inexpressible happiness on realizing that the notification was from GiveDirectly that I had received my first transfer and that they had finally fulfilled their promise of sending us our first transfers.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
On receiving my first transfer, I bought a pair of oxen in order to help me in farming. Previously, I have been hiring from my neighbours who had them. The cost was however high with larger acreage, thus getting my own pair would greatly boost my farming and get robust yields. With the pair, I am assured of cultivating a larger acreage and to maximumly utilise my farm. I also bought an ox-plough so for the pair. Our area is constantly affected by water shortage and the only solution to this was to have a water tank for permanent storage. Thus I bought the water tank and installed in my compound. Once the tank is full, then I am assured of continuous supply for my household. I will no longer be walking long distances in search of water. I also bought some building materials in order to construct a new house for me and my family. I was previously living in a house that was small and could not accommodate us all. Very soon I will be moving to my new house. I paid for my children's school fees also so as for the stay comfortable in school.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have always desired to have my own oxen and ox plough to upscale farming as well as have some dairy cows that can produce enough milk both for sale and household consumption.Geting money to implement this has been a great challenge.Receiving money from Givedirectly means that my dream will eventually come to fruition.
With my own oxen,ox plough and dairy cow,I will upscale my farming to ensure food security for my family and a healthier diet.I will also sell milk in the ready market villages to pay fees and buy clothes for my children.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the morning after preparing my children for school when I embark on harvesting maize from the farms.Much as the harvest may not be enough to sustaon the family for long,I derive happiness from the fact that my labour in the farms have paid off.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship I have faced in life is food insecurity.Without enough food for the family, there is no any other meaningful thing one can accomplish.I have been struggling to feed my family in vain because I depend on traditional farming methods that coupled with infertile lands and harsh climatic conditions, only results to very low yields. This has made my children go hungry and drop out of school.
