How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I am grateful that I was able to fulfill my long-time dream of owning a decent house. The initial was in a critical state and as a mother, it has been stressing me for years. I used to seek shelter from friends which were at times embarrassing. I am happy that this has restored my dignity and hope in life. I however do not have any new goal that I can quote.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, this is the best organization so far that I have ever come across in my life. The fact I received the cash transfers timely and the right amount as proposed stood out. I was able to plan on what to purchase according to the desires of my heart. I, therefore, do not see any part that they need to work on.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 10000 of my second transfer on paying fees for one of my sons who is in boarding school. It has been my prayer to always see him attend all the classes which could result in a brighter future. He has always been at home which used to demoralize him in so many ways. I am happy that this is timely resolved. I also bought several building materials such as iron sheets, nails at a total of KES 17000. Later on, I gave the mason KES 10000 as a labor charge. I had intended to construct a new house because the previous house was in poor condition and almost collapsing. I used to sleep at my friends house especially during the rainy seasons. With the remaining amount of money, I bought foodstuff for my children that took us three weeks.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
As we were at the shamba tilling in preparations for sawing hoping for the rains which failed us later on, my colleague received a message in her phone and jumped in happiness after confirming that it was the transfer of KES 55000.00 from GiveDirectly. Since I do not know how to read I requested her to check on my phone whether the money has been sent too and I was surprised to hear that the money message had been sent at 9am, 2 hours earlier. I was overjoyed and I didn’t proceed with the work I was doing thus told my colleague to leave for home till the next day and we both happily left.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
First, I would like to pass my sincere gratitude to the entire GiveDirectly plus its staffs. If it were not for you I can’t figure out how my children education would be at the moment. The biggest difference that the organization impacted on my life is enabling me to settle all the school fee arrears and also pay for the coming term to ensure that my children are settled in school. I didn’t have peace due to the fee balances and arrears. As at now I am at peace with myself not as before.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Since I was living in a slam-like house which was also leaking, I decided to construct a good house. I bought 24 pieces of iron sheets, 5 ridges and building poles and rafters. Thereafter, I paid school fees for my secondary and primary school children so that they can concentrate on their studies instead of being sent home every now and then. And for the remaining amount, I reserved it for the family upkeep.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means better shelter for my household. This is because my house has old rusty iron sheets and is leaking when it rains. I plan to spend Ksh.30,000 to purchase new iron sheets, Ksh.10,000 to renovate the entire house, Kshs.10,500 to buy three indigenous goats at Kshs.3500/each.The remaining transfers will help me cater for other basic needs such as food and beddings.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the evening. This is because I share stories with my grandchildren before they go to sleep.Unlike in the morning and afternoon hours, When I am alone at home while my grandchildren have gone to school.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship I have ever faced in my household is the leaking house. This is because Iam a house wife and rely on subsistence farming which for the last three years it has not rained enough resulting to poor harvest. This makes me find it hard to renovate the house because the little we get goes to food.Sometime when it is raining I stay awake drawing water that has leaked from the iron sheets, a situation that makes me feel sad.
