How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Since I have already bought land, I would now like to build a house to shelter my family. I also would love to go back to college and study catering. I love cooking and trying out new recipes a lot.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly's work and the support we received were so helpful in numerous ways that most families are currently living a better life. Many constructed new houses and others cleared their children's school fees after receiving the money. They did everything well, and I wish the program would be back to the village after completing the other they are yet to finish. I saw nothing wrong with the entire process and am thankful I was part of the beneficiaries.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I was very excited when I received the second transfer, as it brought hope of accomplishing a lot that my household had planned. I have two children and I have a small shop where I sell vegetables and fruits. On a good day I can make profits of KES 300 which I use to buy daily food and provide for other basic needs since I am a single parent. With the second transfer, I bought a parcel of land at KES 40000, where I would later on build a house. I later spent the remaining amount on foodstuff for my family and also bought new pairs of clothes for my two children. I am grateful for the support that has transformed my household greatly.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 6:40 Pm I was just at home doing my daily chores when I heard a message notification from my phone. Since I was busy I did not bother to check it out. When I was done I decided to check out who could have texted me that time little did I know it was from GiveDirectly. I got a message confirming that I have received KES 55,000 from GiveDirectly. I felt so happy because that was the highest amount of money I have ever received. I knew I would be able to buy a piece of land and do horticulture farming because that was my dream. I am so happy because GiveDirectly has enabled me to fulfill that dream.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
I used all the transfers on purchasing a piece of land. The land was KES 80,000. I borrowed KES 25,000 from a friend to top up the balance. I live with my parents and I had always wished to buy a piece of land and relocate and live separately with my children. This would enable me to do farming and get food for my children easily. I have a small grocery business and sometimes I do casual jobs in the village. These two activities earn me a small income and it was not enough to save so that I can buy land. Due to basic needs and school fees for my children I was not in a position to save some money. I am a single parent and all the responsibilities I had to fulfill. Currently, I have a piece of land and this has given me hope. GiveDirectly has enabled me to fulfill my dream. I have devoted much of my time to farming. I wish to venture into horticulture farming, this will to get enough food for my family and even sell the surplus to earn an extra income. I am so grateful for the support because GiveDirectly has changed my living standard.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent all the transfer on purchasing a piece of land. This had been my dream and when I was enrolled in the program I knew I would be able to fulfill this. I am a single mother and I live with my parents. I have always wished to own land so that I can relocate and live with my children. This was not possible since I did not have money to buy land. I depend on casual jobs and small businesses of grocery. The income from this was for basic needs and school fees for my children. I did not have another source of income. I am so grateful because Currently I won land and I am planning on building a house and doing horticulture farming. GiveDireectly has fulfilled my dream and this had given me hope to see life from a positive angle which was not the case before.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I need to buy land where I can establish my home. Living in my father's and has been with a lot of conflicts with my siblings. If I get this transfers, I will use it to buy about a quarter of an acre where I will work for my children's welfare through farming. I have been depending on casual Labour on a tea plantation, but I stopped because I have a chest problem. Lighter work on my farm can easily earn me about KES 300 per day fr selling vegetables that I will grow. I will spend about KES 80,000 on this and then buy a dairy cow at KES 20,000
What is the happiest part of your day?
When I settled at home in February this year, I got peace without conflicts that I used to have with my siblings. My brothers have been disturbing me for bearing children out of marriage. My children can now learn in school at peace. I am also happy that the money I make from a grocery business ,about KES 300 per day can now go into meeting the needs of my children unlike before when it used to cater for everyone including my siblings since we used to share one household.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Lack of money to go for training in a diploma in food and nutrition has been my biggest hindrance. I wish yo take the course so that I can use it to earn a living, given that I am trainable, being that I attained a good grade in secondary school.
