Poultry has a good market, especially in our nearby town where people have ventured into selling chicken meat in their food booths. The supply of the chickens has recently been low and I saw an opportunity where I can invest and earn a favorable profit. Since I lack the finances to facilitate this project, it has remained a desire for me for a long time. With this cash grant, I intend to spend 30000 KES to start poultry farming and this will provide me with the chance to supply chicken to the food vendors in our area. I will, therefore, save my first 10 months' transfers to raise this amount. This will act as my reliable source of income because I am currently jobless. Thus, this is generally what receiving this money means to me.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The food security that we have had ever since my parents started receiving their cash transfers from GiveDirectly is something that has brought a feeling of happiness to my life. This is because, even if I miss the opportunity of working, I am so sure that my parents will have food to share with my siblings.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Being a firstborn to my father came with a lot of responsibilities because he is jobless. Imagine at the age of 23 years, I stand in the position of supporting a family of 7 members. We have suffered many challenges including lack of food, which forced me to drop out of school when I was in class 6 and to start engaging in some casual jobs to earn some little cash to support my family. These jobs are also not consistent and sometimes I miss the chance to work which means going without food that day. With all these challenges, our household has turned into a laughing stock something that has subjected me to the feeling of shame. Thus, I consider the lack of a reliable source of income as my biggest worry at the moment.
