How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I do not have any new goal now, I wish to continue investing in the dairy-keeping project because this generates some income through the sales of milk. We have a cooler milk plant in our area and I sell my milk and earn some money to meet my daily household expenses.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly does well in that they conduct their training perfectly before giving us the money. Most of the people understood the pieces of training and spent their transfer well. We are so grateful because not only GiveDirectly gave us money but also trained us on how to invest the money wisely. I do not find anything that GiveDirectly did not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I lived in a small house that could not host all my family members comfortably. I have always wished to build a better house but I did not have enough money to buy some of the materials. I rely on dairy keeping project and I sell the milk at a cooler milk plant that our county government has constructed. The money that I get from the sales of milk is for household basic needs and school fees for my children. I was not in a position to purchase the building materials. Besides that, I am a tailor and I get a small income through this to meet the basic needs of my family. When I received the money from GiveDirectly I invested $450 in materials and paid the workers who constructed the house. I am so grateful because currently, I have a decent and spacious timber house. This was my dream house and I am so happy. GiveDirectly has enabled us to make this happen on time. Whenever I have visitors they have a place to sleep and even feel comfortable. With the remaining amount of money, I bought a water tank for storing clean water for domestic use. This is because we used to walk long distances to collect clean water. This was tedious and time-consuming. I am so grateful for the support because GiveDirectly has changed our living standards.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I work as a tailor at a nearby shopping center. I had obtained a loan and spent it on buying a dairy cow for milk production. I was expecting that I would repay with my earnings from the tailoring business but things didn't go as expected. My business wasn't doing well and I ran into a financial crisis trying to repay the loan. That drove me to financial stress as it had reached a point where I was able to concentrate on my job. The moment when I received my transfer, I felt so happy as I knew that the money would enable me to repay the loan so that I would be free again.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life since I received my transfer from GiveDirectly is that I restored my peace after repaying the loan. Now I have been focusing on my job and that has brought me happiness as I do not have more worries about how to repay the money. I am confident that in a few days, I will be able to clear the remaining amount.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
With the money which I had received, I spent KES 35000 on repaying the long overdue loan and that gave me some relief. I then spent KES 10000 on supporting my tailoring business. The remaining amount of KES 10000, I gave to my spouse to spend on foodstuffs and clothing.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I was not given a piece of land by my parents. This money means I'll own my own piece of land soon. I have been living in someone else's land while paying for it in instalments. My small job as a tailor could not pay for the land while providing for my family. I'm happy that I'll settle the remaining part of money and expand my business. The remaining money will also help me build a better kitchen and bedroom for my children.
What is the happiest part of your day?
When I heard that Give Directly were coming to our village I was so happy. It means that if I qualify to the money my family will get a place to call home because I have been living in someone else's land. We thank God
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Not having stable and consistent income has been a challenge to us a family. Food prices and school fees has gone up in the recent months. This is giving as problems yet I'm still paying for a piece of land and living in.
