How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I have always wanted a business which gives me flexibility of being close to my family so that I can bond with my children. Therefore, my goal this year was to expand my poultry business so that I can be able to support my family without much strain.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
What GiveDirectly does well is offering us exceptional recipients support. Your services are out of this world! I love how you treated us with much respect, kindnesses and dignity. May you always be blessed.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I have always wanted to have financial independence by doing something that I have been so passionate about and that is poultry farming. Since I couldn't not raise enough capital to start the business from average daily wage of $2 that I earn from working on people's farms, my hopes had faded. When I was enrolled in the program, I was so happy because I was not far from achieving my dreams and this was the perfect opportunity that I had waited for. I spend $90 of my second transfer to pay fees arrears that were long overdue and had made it impossible to pick my driving license. I spend the balance to buy eggs incubator worth $240 and the balance to build structures and buy some few chicken. My business is now picking up well and I'm grateful to GiveDirectly for making this dream come true.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I felt so much happy the moment I received money from GiveDirectly. I was preparing supper when I got to learn that GiveDirectly had sent us money and the amount of joy in me was just out of this world.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is the house that I built. We were living in a small house that did not allow us to have the much needed comfort. I am a father of two and I normally rely on casual work to make ends meet and the amount of money that we got was way too little.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used KES 32000 to build a new house and used another KES 10000 to start poultry keeping business while the remaining amount was used to buy food and other basic household needs. We have been living in a very small house that did not provide the much needed comfort for us and we are now very happy that we are in the process of building a new house for us.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My wife and I have an ambitious plan of rearing poultry on a large scale. From my casual jobs such as weeding people's farms to earn a living, I have managed to save KES 5000 for this project but this is still ways below my estimated target of KES 25,000. I have a flock of 6-chicken and I intend to add another 14 to make it 20 in total. Out of this business, I am sure of earning KES 300 profit from the sale of eggs per day. Receiving this money will enable me to start a poultry business which will give me financial independence.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Two months ago, Kenya Power staff came to our village and erected electricity poles in almost every compound. They told us that the project is funded by the World Bank and each of us will soon be connected to electricity. The fact that my house will be connected with power was enough to make me happy
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Lack of safe water for domestic use is a big challenge that many residents, including myself, are grappling with. This is caused by the frequent drought that we witness every other time. Members of my family have fallen sick several times because of drinking unsafe water. Two months ago, I spent KES 5000 in treating my wife and child from typhoid disease, and I am worried that if this situation is not checked it might recur among other members.
