How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My greatest goal was to have something that would be of great help to my family in terms of income generation. Therefore, with the transfers, I had planned to purchase a motorbike that my husband would be using in conducting business believing that the income would be of help in terms of providing necessities to my family.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly is doing great in terms of providing financial to us. Personally, I have been struggling financially for the longest time and unable to do most of the things that I wished to have done before I received the transfers, but finally I saw light at the end of the tunnel and life had so far changed. Everything is being done well and there is nothing to be improved on.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
The transfers that I have been receiving from GiveDirectly had been such a blessing to my family. My husband and I had been struggling financially but nothing seemed to be working, getting money to educate our children or to provide better meals had been quite a challenge. But upon GiveDirectly coming into our lives, life had changed for the better. It was my husband’s dream to one day own a motorcycle that he would use to do business with, and finally, he saw his dream come true. The transfers had been of help because I spent part of my first transfer as a down payment to purchase him a secondhand motorcycle from a friend and finally cleared the remaining amount with part of the second transfer worth $160, and he finally became a proud owner of something he had been longing for. With the remaining transfers, I managed to spend $35 on debt payments, $40 on school fees for my two school-going children, $60 on the purchase of bedding and the remaining on food and other shopping for the family. Thanks to Givedirectly for bringing such an impactful program into our lives.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I received a mobile money notification from the sender Segovia. I wasn't sure if I was the intended recipient at first, but after reading through it, the amount I received was exactly what I expected from GiveDirectly. Even though I was perplexed, I was excited and hoping that no one would reverse the transaction. It was around 4:00 p.m. when I had to call my husband, who was overjoyed with the news because he had heard about it from other recipients. I collected them after two days, when I was ready to make the first purchases, because we had all of the plans in place.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
After living under an old roof with my family of six for the past two years, I am glad to see the biggest difference in my daily life since GiveDirectly arrived. The construction I am about to begin will bring a significant transformation to my family that I did not expect to happen so soon, and I am grateful for the generous support that has made it possible for me.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
We had been living in a small house built with various construction materials as a family of six, just to make a roof for my family. We had been living on my parents' land, which was still being subdivided among the siblings before erecting a semi-permanent structure. I was relieved when I was given my share, and after receiving the first transfer, I went out and bought construction materials, including 30 iron sheets for $10 each, three bags of cement for $20, and building poles for $30. I have not begun construction yet because I need to pay the construction costs and purchase additional materials that are still missing. My husband and I have been doing casual labor for a pittance, barely enough to support our family of six. We agreed to spend a portion of this first transfer on a motorcycle. We were fortunate to obtain a used motorcycle from a neighbor who was selling it after being involved in an accident and being unable to ride it any longer. We agreed to pay in installments, with the first payment of $100. We are currently renovating it before using it to provide transportation services. In addition, I used the remaining funds to buy food for my family to supplement the wages we were receiving from casual labor.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
I have a family of six members and we are all living in a one-room house that also serves as the kitchen. Our clothes always have smoke smell especially when it rains. One of children almost got burned one day when she fall down from bed during night when she was asleep. The house also leaks during the rainy season because the iron sheets have small holes. I will build a two-room house with 30 pieces of iron sheets. The iron sheets will cost $ 10 per piece. I will also use $ 600 to buy other building materials and labor. The house will add more respect me in the community. I will also use $ 100 to buy food for the family.
What is the happiest part of your day?
On August 2022, I got $60 from the National government to support me in fighting hunger. I was able to buy one bag of maize flour. The flour boosted the family for one month. The family was able to take three meals per day unlike before when I used to take one meal per day. The relief money brought happiness to me.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I am a housewife who depends on subsistence farming and my husband is just a casual worker. It is three years now without rain in our village. This has caused famine in the community. My husband earns approximately $ 50 per month from his work. This is little for the family expenses and mostly it caters for food only. Children have not been going to school always due to the lack of fees. Lack of a reliable source of income is the current challenge I am currently facing.
