How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Before receiving the transfer I had a goal of renovate my house because it was in a bad state. Surprisingly when I received the money the goal changed but it changed for a better one. Instead of renovating the house I decided to construct a new one.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
For the short period I have seen and heard about GiveDirectly, the organization is very clean as snow. The officers are very candid and frank, they explain in a manner that if you don’t qualify receiving the transfer you will just know it by yourself without being falsely promised. They also keep their words, handle people well with the required etiquette and this has made the organization to be blameless.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
After getting the second transfer, I opted to construct a new spacious house because the one I had was old, small and also leaking profusely during rainy season and the leakages had damaged the walls because they were made of mud. To completion of the house, I used KES 40000.00. Thereafter I bought 2 goats for KES 6000.00 to add on to the ones I had already bought using the first transfer. I also added stock to my cafeteria business.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
At mid-morning, I was at my cafe going about my daily duties. I heard a notification on my phone and when I checked it, I realised that I had received the cash transfer I had been expecting from GiveDirectly. I was overjoyed and so excited to finally start the expansion of my business.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
For the first time in my life, I can earn a decent amount of money that can enable me to cater for the basic needs of food, house rent and clothing. I own a small cafe, which is my only source of income. Sadly, I only used to earn KES 6,000 a month from the same. This amount was just too little to sustain me and my family. Since receiving the transfer from GiveDirectly, a lot has changed. I was able to buy more foodstuff and improve the quality of services at the cafe. This decision has worked out wonderfully. The number of customers has increased. This has caused the profit to rise to KES 10,000 a month. It has only been a short while so I expect the situation to keep getting better. I feel so blessed.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Financial instability has plagued me and my family for years. This makes it hard to meet our basic needs including food, house rent and clothing. I run a small cafe to earn money. Unfortunately, the profit from this is only KES 6,000 a month, which is inadequate. I was excited when I received this transfer. I spent KES 10,500 on buying three goats. I hope to sell this whenever I need money. I then invested KES 42,500 in expanding my business. Acquiring more foodstuff and improving the quality of services will attract more customers and subsequently increase the profit. I can then earn enough money to meet my and my family's needs.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My ambition is to be a successful business woman. I own a small business of selling food stuffs to students nearby school of which I earn profit of 250 Kenya Shillings a day which is not enough for me and my family . Apart from that my husband is casual labourer whose job cannot be anticipated. Iam planning to use 20000 Kenya shillings to expand my business other than that I will use 20000 kenya Shillings to buy cattle, 30000 shillings to construct semi-permanent spacious house for me and my children given that my family is growing because the one that we are in now is small. This is dream come true for me.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the evening when I get back home from work. This moment I feel so happy because I know I Will pay bills and buy meal of the day for my family.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship I face in life is lack of support from my husband. As small business woman I get very little profit of less that 300 Kenya Shillings a day which is not sufficient to cater for the daily needs of my family. My husband works in Mombasa as a casual worker the little that he get serve only for his needs thus me and other family members who we depend on him suffer with hunger.
