How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
The transfers made it possible for me to realize a long time dream I had of setting up a public library within the slum to help the children whose parents cannot afford books for their studies after school. Without the transfers, I would still be running up and down requesting for financial assistance to help set up the library, but now that it is up and running, it is easier to ask for support to improve its current state. I am also able to provide for my family through the transfers even though I do not have an income of my own.
Do you have any new or additional goals for your life?
I have five children, four children of whom are in school. At the moment, I do not have any new investment plans with the money but to ensure that my children's school needs such as school fees, books and school uniforms are catered for. I do not have any source of income as I am currently running a library that I set up within my area to support the children who cannot afford books. This makes it hard for me to provide for my family because I spend most of my time mobilizing resources for the library. I do not want my children to be sent away from school for delaying in paying their school fees or not having what is required in school, hence the need to channel most of the transfers on their studies. I am also currently relying on the transfers for other household needs.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
This month's transfer came at such a good time when my children were just going back to school and required books for the new year. I, therefore, spent the whole amount on textbooks and exercise books for the children so that I would not have to worry about it for the rest of the term.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I am now financially stable. I do not struggle as I used to before the transfers. I no longer go borrowing and begging for help like before the transfers. This is because, from the transfers, I have managed to pay all my debts and meet all my financial needs in time with my transfers. This has really changed my life and I would also want to change the lives of others by giving up to the community through the library I am building to help the young ones who are back home for the festive holidays keep active. I am glad I can now use my own finances to handle my needs without seeking help. It is a very big step in my life.
Do you have any new or additional goals for your life?
My new goal is to start a library. I see a lot of children lazy around during the holidays and in this period they end up being lured into drugs and other criminal activities. This is why I have decided to open up a library which will keep them busy from any mind-corrupting activity in the area.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent my transfer on buying food for my family. My children had come back home for the holidays and it meant my daily budget would rise since they take all the meals at home. This is why I chose to buy food once a month so that we can never run out of what to eat in the course of the month. I would not want to starve my family.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Being the sole provider for my family, I was really struggling to take care of my family and even provide the basic needs for them. Many at times the landlord has locked my family out of the house due to delayed rent payments which are a parent's nightmare. With the help of these transfers, I am able to do more than ever could in terms of provisions and even give stability to my family for it's not every month that we now have to face the eviction threats from our landlord.
Do you have any new or additional goals for your life?
My wife currently has no job and is a stay-home-mum to help take care of our five children. This, however, is not quite a good thing because it leaves me with a very heavy responsibility of providing for the entire family on my own considering how little I make from my small business. I now have plans of setting up a small grocery business for her just outside the compound so that she can still be close to the house for the sake of our little children, but still make money to assist me to take care of the household needs.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My agreement with my landlord was that I should be paying my rent by the fifth of every month. This month, I delayed because I was unable to raise the money before the agreed time, so my landlord had given us an eviction notice which he actually fulfilled when he came to throw my family out. My wife was, however, able to convince him to give us one more day as we expected to receive GD transfer which came the following day. When I received the money, my first stop was at the Landlord's door to pay the rent to avoid more drama, then the little I had left was spent on foodstuff and other critical household needs.

Do you have any new goals that you didn't have before receiving the transfer?
My goal is to start an organization that can support the community with income generating activities by offering training in different areas, or even offering tools and equipment for business such as knitting machines.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I now have some extra money every month to supplement my income. I can also provide for my family comfortably without much struggles like I used to.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent my transfers to celebrate Christmas with my family, to pay school fees, and to purchase household goods such as meals in my house. I was quite broke when I first received the transfers, I did not have any money to give my family a decent Christmas. I was happy to receive the transfers as I was able to enjoy Christmas with my children and to buy them better meals in order to celebrate the season. I also spent part of the transfers to pay school fees and to purchase school uniform and school books. I am also planning to begin a poultry business with my coming transfers.
Describe the moment when you started receiving transfers. How did you feel?
On that day, I woke up in the morning and I went to check my phone for any missed calls or messages. That is the moment that I saw the message and I was very happy. I had believed the rumors that were going around in my neighborhood in Mathare 4A village, about the transfers not being real. When I saw the message, I believed that truly the transfers were real and I went to withdraw the money to buy food for my children so we could celebrate.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
I will spend my transfers to invest in a new poultry business. We are approaching the holiday season where delicacies like chicken will be on high demand. I will buy chicken from Burma market and resell in Huruma estate and here in Mathare also. Secondly, I use my transfers to purchase commodities that will be required in my house like food, clothing and any other needs including paying rent. Finally, I wil put aside some cash for any emergencies that might come up. Emergencies such as illnesses.
Describe your biggest worry.
My top concern is failing in life because failure can bring depression and lead to misery and illnesses. My second concern is failing to sustain my family. I will not want my children to be in a state of misery because they lack basic needs. My third concern is being treated badly or being disrespected because disrespect makes someone feel undermined which can create feelings of worthlessness.
What are your greatest ambitions?
I am in the process of trying to kick start a Community Based Organization that I founded. I registered this organization in 2013 as a Community Based Organization that has been focusing on Youth and women empowerment. I use football to create awareness of my organization and to empower youth and children by trying to distract young people from social evils that happen in slums, to more productive activities such as football. My ambition is to see this organization grow to a point where I can recruit and support more youth into the program.
Describe your usual day. How do you spend your time?
My usual day begins at 6:00 am when i wake up. I prepare myself and assist my two children aged 8 and 6 to get ready for school. I then take them to school and I come back home to browse for available jobs online or any job available around that I can take. In the evening, I pick my children from school at 5:00pm. We then come back home and I assist them with homework as we wait for dinner preparations before we retire to bed. In my free time, I enjoy coaching football games, watching TV and listening to reggae music.
