Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I woke up to a message confirming I had received $200. Unsure of the source, I called my village elder to ask if it was from GiveDirectly. He confirmed that the money had indeed come from them. Overjoyed by the news, my mood instantly brightened and set a positive tone for the day. My first thought was to use the money to find a safe piece of land. I wanted to move my family away from the devastating effects of the floods that had previously caused so much damage.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest change in my life since I started receiving cash transfers from GiveDirectly has been acquiring a piece of land on higher ground, away from the dangers of floods. This has given me peace of mind, knowing I’ve mitigated the future risk of flooding for my family. Every night, I feel a deep sense of satisfaction when I think about owning this plot of land. It provides security and hope for a better future. I can only thank GiveDirectly for making this possible.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When I received $200 from GiveDirectly, I was overjoyed because this money would help protect my family from the devastating effects of floods. I used the entire amount to pay a deposit for a piece of land on higher ground, away from the flood-prone areas. During the floods, my family of four was severely impacted, with the cold affecting us and our farm being destroyed. I believe that buying this new land will permanently shield my family from future floods. I plan to continue using my current land for farming during the dry season, utilizing water from the nearby river for irrigation. This way, I can still benefit from the land while ensuring my family’s safety by living in a more secure area.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
I will allocate the initial $154 to cover school fees for my two secondary school children, ensuring their education remains uninterrupted. The remaining $692 will be invested in constructing a more spacious home for my family, addressing our housing challenges effectively.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Receiving $47 from World Vision for flood-affected households brought me immense joy and happiness. I used the amount to purchase food, which brought me relief and comfort during a challenging time.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Paying school fees for my two secondary school children has been my greatest challenge. I lack the funds to make my 1.8-acre farm productive, which could provide both food and income through the sale of produce. The farm requires HDPE pipes to bring water in, but I cannot afford them. Additionally, our single room is insufficient for my family of six. I do not have the finances to construct a larger house that would accommodate us adequately.
