How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I do not have any other new goals since I am still working on my current goal of completing the construction of a small shop and starting a kiosk business in the village. This will serve as an alternative reliable source of income for my family of 8 members. Currently, the temporary casual job that we do with my spouse at the iron mines is no longer sustainable because we are hardly paid on time which forced us to go hungry in most instances. Accomplishing this dream will ensure the beginning of better living conditions.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, Givedirectly did well in following up to the recipients after receiving the transfer. Through this we are able to share our experiences as well as how we spend the aid to better our living standard. Additionally, giving unconditional cash is best decision they did.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 10,000 of the recent transfer to pay part of the fee for my 6 children who are still in primary school. This is because they had a huge fee balance since the casual labor at the quarry did not earn me enough income to sustain all our needs as well as pay for their educational needs. Currently, I am happy that the children are learning without any challenges. Furthermore, I used KES 20,000 to construct a small structure alongside the main road in the village. I intended to start a small kiosk that will be our alternative source of income for the family. Also, I spend part of the remaining amount to purchase one pair of school uniforms for every child since they had one pair that they were wearing throughout the week something that was very embarrassing. The remainder, assisted me to purchase food for the family since we lacked food and mostly had to go sleep hungry.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 6pm evening and I had just gotten back home after a day's hard work at the quarry where I used to work as a casual labourer, when I received the text message confirming that I had received the money from GiveDirectly. I felt so happy and thanked God when I got the money because it was going to help me address the challenges I was facing and help improve my living standards. I knew I was going to get the things that I had desired for so long, especially livestock, a bed and mattress, food for my family, school fees for my children and set up my own retail kiosk business. This was something that wasn't possible before as my job as a casual labourer in a quarry couldn't enable me to address since it hardly raised enough money even to make me meet my family's immediate needs.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life since I started receiving money from GiveDirectly is that I now see lots of changes and progress, especially in that I was able to get the things that I didn't have and couldn't afford before. I was able to get a bed and mattresses, livestock, substantial food for my family, paid school fees for my family and eventually started my own retail kiosk business. I am so happy and grateful to GiveDirectly, for making this impossible dream come true.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent most of the transfer which was KES 21000 on setting up my own retail kiosk business because it will be my regular source of income which would always help me meet my family's immediate needs. This business will, as well, be a source of capital for starting up other investments from the profits that I will be making from the business. Establishing this business was not possible before because my casual job in the quarry couldn't give me the ability to, since the salary I used to earn wasn't sufficient enough and mostly catered for my family's immediate needs. I am so happy and grateful to GiveDirectly for the program made it possible for me to realise this dream and helped me address the challenges that were making me live a life of hardships.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have a lot of plans for the transfers from Givedirectly; and on my top list of priorities, I want to buy beddings for my sons, and also for myself and spouse. For a long time we have sleeping on mats and sacks and when it's gets very cold it's worse because we all end up getting lice. So I plan to buy two 6*6 king-size beds that all of them will be able to fit and sleep cormfotablly like any other kids. And in the second transfer I plan to open up a small kiosk for myself currently am employed in a quarry and am feeling sick, because of the dust. So If I own my business I will be able to manage my health.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My sons have been unwell in the beginning of last year, but offlate they are fine, and I feel, no more hospital visits, and I thank the Almighty I pray he continues blessing us with good health. They are my tomorrow and they mean so much to me.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Currently I lack a stable job, me and my husband are working in quarry which is tiresome and for me I get sick all the time because of the dust. And I have developed chest problems, and my health is getting worse. We are not able to pay school fees for our six sons who are all at home now, and I am not sure when I will take them back to school, because I lack financial support. It's not easy providing food at home, we live with a big burden of debts from nearby shops, because we depend on quarry which is paying peanuts, and also salary doesn't come in time. This makes it tough to plan for my family needs.
