How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My goal is to continue seeking proper medical care for my spouse who needs to undergo an operation this year. I intend to sell some livestock to get his medication. This will restore the happiness that we had been missing for many years. In addition, I need to purchase another water tank that will enable me to store enough water for sell to the neighbour to earn an additional income.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Giving cash tranfer which was unconditional is what the organisation did well. Visiting and assessing our eligibility by asking the right questions and how we intend to transform our lives with the cash was a well-planned process. I feel everything went well and there is nothing they should charge or improve on their processes.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent $200 to purchase gutters to assist in collecting enough rainwater for household consumption. Over the last 3 years, I have been struggling to walk long distances to get water for my family dispute being old. In addition, I spent $100 to boost my livestock rearing by purchasing addition one local dairy cow. This will increase the milk production for family use as well as sell extra litres of milk to get additional income for other needs like clothing. Furthermore, I used $13p to seek proper medical care for my spouse who had been suffering from a kidney problem for more than 5 years. Currently, I am happy that he is feeling well after the medication and waiting to undergo an operation. With the remaining amount, I bought enough food for the family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
While still in my house due to the morning cold, I heard my phone ringing at around 7 am. I hurriedly picked it up only to realize that it was a message and because I do not know how to read it, I contacted my helper for confirmation. After reading the message, he turned and looked at me with a smiling face and I blindly and involuntarily smiled back. Thereafter, he broke the news that I had received the first transfer of KES 55000.00from GiveDirectly. My heart was filled with joy and thankfulness since the organization had honored its promise and the money came at the time I needed it most.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my life since I received the first transfer is that, initially, accessing food on daily basis was not easy because of the drought that affected our area. Crops and animals died thus making our lives difficult. I am grateful to GiveDirectly because the transfer I received has held my family to get some food and make us move. Again the water problem that was been affecting us is no more because I got a water tank and I am storing water. All this could not happen if it were not for GiveDirectly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
For quite a long time, we have been having problems in sourcing water. The water points are a distance and during a dry season like this, we do not access fresh water at all instead we drink water from wells. I have desired to get a water tank to store water for my family since water is life. Upon withdrawing the money, I first took KES 30000.00 and purchased a bigger water tank that can hold a lot of water. Due to illiteracy, I cannot tell the capacity but it is very big. This water tank once full of water will not only aid us as a family during the dry season but also act as a source of income because I will have to sell some of the water. Thereafter, I used the remaining amount in buying enough food stock for the family since the drought had taken a severe angle and things were tough concerning getting some food.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I am an old woman who has five sons and one daughter and they all have their household. They have children too. This means that my status has grown high. I live in a two bedroom house which is not spacious enough to accommodate my visitors and all my grandchildren. I will use KES 90000 to expand my house by adding two more rooms. One will be for visitors and the other one for my grandchildren. I will also use KES 20000 to buy two beds and two mattresses to add comfort in the two new rooms.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My last daughter got a job at Mombasa last year 2021 November. She provides food every month that takes the family the whole month. Initially, we used to take only one meal per day but now we take three meals per day as a family. My daughters job brought happiness in my life.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Due to the small house that I own, it is stressful for me to seek accommodation for my visitors in my neighbors home. I do not know how well they are treated over night their. Lack of spacious house is the challenge I am facing.
