How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I have three children in college and two in high school. Through out this tough journey of educating them, I sold almost all my livestock. My goal was to buy a dairy cow so that I can have three which will aid in paying school fees through milk selling.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
What GiveDirectly does well is giving us full control of the transfers so that we can spend it based on our needs. This way, we have been able to uplift ourselves.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I have two dairy 3 children in college and two in high school and paying their school fees has not been a walk in the park. I have been operating a cereals shop and the income that I get has is what I use to pay school fees. Previously, I used to supplement it with the income that I was earning from selling milk but I was averwhemed with bills and sold most of my dairy cows only to remain with two. My goal was to add a third one so that I can increase my income from selling milk and therefore make it easy to pay school fees. I spent KES 33000 of my last transfer to buy a dairy cow and the balance to buy school uniform, clothes and food for my family. I'm hopeful that in the next one year, the cow will have given birth and this will easen the burden of paying school fees for me.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
Words cannot express the immense joy that I felt when I received my transfer, it was like a dream come true because it came at the right time of need because my son was supposed to join campus, I was busy with my house chores when I heard my phone vibrating loudly, upon checking I saw a Mpesa notification showing that I had received a sum of KES 55,000, I am so happy for the support that brought so much happiness in our lives, I knew that with the transfer I will be able to accomplish the plans that I had, I am grateful for the support that gave us hope in life.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life now is that I managed to enrol my son to pursue a course in a career that suits him in a university, unlike before where I was stranded because I did not have enough money to enrol him, at some point he was frustrated due to lack of money to see him through the college education, in addition, that, I was able to stock adequate foodstuffs that would last for a while, this would mean that my children would not go to bed on their empty stomachs. GiveDIrectly allowed us to change our lives for the better .hence we are grateful for that.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a businesswoman in the village where I buy and sell maize in retail, I have one child in secondary school and two in the university. School fees have been my major challenge due to financial constraints, therefore when I received my transfer I paid a sum of KES 45,000 to cater for the fees for my son who was joining his first year in the university, in addition to that I bought a bag of maize so that that we would have enough foodstuffs. I am so happy that GiveDiectly gave me the promised transfer on time as they had promised, my children can comfortably study.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Recieving this money means I will start my business of buying maize in large stock and selling them locally, it has been a while since I thought about it. I will also offset a huge school fees balance for my children who are in secondary school. Being a single mother, for now a decade when I lost my husband who was a bread winner in the family, it has been a struggle of here and there to us in the family. I want to thank Givedirectly for coming to my home. I plan to spend KES. 45,000 to pay school fees, KES.50,000 to start the business and the remaining balance to buy food.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I love doing my casual jobs, since this is the time I am occupied psychologically and later in the day I am payed which really motivates me, and so my happiest part of the day is in the morning.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Since I lost my husband, my son who was at that time in Collage had to drop for the sake of his siblings who were in secondary, I have all along been doing casual jobs within my village in order to buy food and pay little money to school, this has really been a tall order for me to achieve in life.
