How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Building a better house is one of the big priorities that I had planned before receiving the transfer. We lived in a small house that could not host all the family members comfortably. Currently, we have a spacious and decent house and we live well and whenever we have friends and relatives we can host them comfortably without any stress.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
The training and the enrollment process were conducted well without any biases. Most of the people who received the transfer spent it on building better houses, buying dairy cows and even paying school fees for their children.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spend KES 51,000 to purchase tiles, ceiling boards, and wires for wiring the house. This was one of my main concerns because I topped up the first transfer with my savings and build a new house. The house was not yet complete when I received the second transfer. We lived in a small house that could not host all the family well. Currently I have completed the construction and my house looks so decent. We are so comfortable and whenever we have visitors we can host them well without any stress. I am so grateful because this could not have been possible without the support from GiveDirectly. The rest of the money I topped up with my savings and paid school fees for my son who is in secondary school. He is studying well in school without being disturbed, we hope to see a better performance this year. We are so happy because GiveDirectly had changed our living standards.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was in my small shop in my village going about my daily hustle when I stated hearing people claiming that they had received money from segovia. Some of them came to my shop to share the good news. I checked my mpesa message and discovered that I had received money as well. I felt so happy and informed my husband who works from far that indeed we had received the money as promised. He equally was happy. I later sent him the money where he bought tiles and ceiling boards to improve our home.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is the completion of our main house. The money has seen us put tiles on the floor and erect ceilings as well. The house is now complete and my family and I can't wait to move in once we get to paint it.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used KES 40000 to buy tiles, cement and ceiling to complete a house that had stalled for a long time. My husband had taken a loan from his work station and we had been able to build our house to almost complete structure. We ran out of cash and we had school fees to pay and this stalled the structure. I am happy that GiveDirectly came to help us realize our dream of having a better home for our children. The second transfer will help us with the painting

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means financial stability for my family. I have been a shopkeeper as well as a poultry farmer for the past 5 years. On March 2021, a gang of thieves broke into my homestead stealing all my 25 hens and stealing all the valuables in my shop. The stock of items worth KES 30000 was stolen. This destabilized my business as well as our peace of mind and hearts because we depended so much on the profitability of the business and incomes from the sale of the eggs produced by the birds. Truly, this is the best time to receive this money because I will be able to reestablish the shop business and even start stocking clothes for sale with KES 50000. In addition, we will be able to start keeping poultry since it was a profitable business and because we still have the coop.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My firstborn joined Chepkechek Secondary school this year after achieving 333 marks at Chemaetany Primary School. This brought a lot of joy to my family because he was able to emerge top in the whole school. Him joining this school assures me of quality education and a good grade for my son.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest challenge we are currently facing is financial stability and security within the village. In March this year, some gangsters attacked my poultry farm and my shop stealing the stock of household items worth KES 30000 and 25 hens. Poultry keeping has been the main source of income to us because we would sell clutch of eggs and earn an approximate amount of KES 5000 month. The enterprise was also a source of food for my family because we could consume eggs and chicken. But because of this theft and robbery, my family has been struggling a lot to meet the basic needs of the family such as food, clothing, and school fees. The fear of establishing a business and leaving my compound for other chores has gripped my life.
