How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My new goal is to open a shop business. I had been hired by someone before to sell a shop for him and I saw how good the business was. I have hence always wished to open my own since it is a profitable business. I will be able to make enough money that can enable me to comfortably provide for my family.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly did well by enrolling people into the program as a household and not individually. This has helped to strengthen the unity of a family since most of them planned together on how to spend the money. I hence do not see anything wrong with their way of work. I urge them to continue with the good work.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent most of the transfer money on buying a motorbike. I had decided to save the whole of the first transfer and combine it with the second transfer so that it could be enough to purchase the motorbike. I bought a second-hand one at KES 80000. It is still in good condition. I decided to buy the motorbike so that I could start my own taxi business. I had been casually employed by someone to do the motorbike taxi business for him. I used to make an average of KES 500 per day from the job. With having bought my own, I now make an average of KES 750 per day after fueling the motorbike. I have hence been able to make more money with my own which is enough to meet the needs of my family. With the remaining amount of money, I used it in buying food for my family and clothes for my children. Thank you so much GiveDirectly for supporting us. Our lives have been uplifted and we are no longer like before.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
we were preparing to go to the farm together with my wife when I heard my phone ringing, it was 9:30 am, upon checking the phone I saw a Mpesa notification showing that I had received KES55,000 from GiveDirectly, this was the best news that morning, we were so happy in that we never proceeded to the farm but instead we embarked on planning how we were going to spend our transfer. I knew that I would be able to restart my taxi business with the money. I am thankful for the transfer that impacted our lives greatly.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my life is that I am now hopeful that I will be able to revive my motorbike business, I also managed to buy household items that I never had, I am also saving on the cost of fuel because I bought a solar lamp for fighting, I am excited in receiving my second transfer because it will enable me to acquire a second-hand motorbike, I am thankful for the support that brought hope for better tomorrow in our lives.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a motorcycle rider offering taxi services in the village, I am blessed with a wife and two children, I once had a motorbike but it developed a mechanical issue, I was forced to sell it at a throw-away price. the motorbike was my main source of income, therefore we were left with no option but to depend on other casual jobs to earn a living. When I received my transfer prioritized setting aside KES 20,000 so that when I get my second transfer I would be able to top up the money so that I could acquire a second-hand motorbike, I then used the remaining amount in purchasing a solar lamp, furniture, clothes, and foodstuffs. I am grateful for the support that changed my life to a better one.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My ambition is to own a motorcycle. I used to ride someone elses motorcycle for one year but for the last 4 months i stopped because it had mechanical problems.i now do casual jobs to sustain my family needs which is not enough as it is on and off and earns only $2 in a day. Also my 2 children are still young and they do not get enough milk for consumption.Purchasing a second hand motorcycle with $700 would be so helpful because i will earn a living from it.Then i would buy 2 dairy cows at 200$ each which would mean enough milk for my children.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the evening when i sit down with my family to have dinner.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Financial contraint is my biggest hardship. The casual jobs i do is not enough and am not abler to provide enough food and clothing for my family.
