How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
In the years ahead, together with my husband, our plan involves harnessing the youthful energy of our grandchildren to embark on a goat-rearing venture. We aim to multiply our goat herd, strategically selling them for profit. Also, cultivate maize and millet during the most favorable climatic conditions. Not only will this endeavor provide us with a sustainable source of income, but it will also secure an abundant food supply for our family.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly's support has been an absolute game-changer in my life. Without their help, navigating life alongside my husband would still be incredibly challenging in our old age. Things have improved significantly; now, we don't just have enough food on the table, but we've also started our own goat-rearing venture and have aspirations of constructing a better home. This transformation has meant the world to us. I wish we could receive even more support from GiveDirectly. Their assistance has been a beacon of hope, and with a bit more help, we could truly build a future beyond our wildest dreams.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Receiving my latest transfer filled my heart with joy. In our old age, my husband and I cannot work to earn a living. We depend on our children and grandchildren, who are tirelessly striving to meet the needs of their own families. Our primary concern is securing enough food for sustenance. With this in mind, we decided to allocate $60 towards purchasing essential food items. Our humble abode, a weathered grass-thatched mud house, becomes particularly challenging to live in during the rainy season. Therefore, we resolved to invest $140 in purchasing building materials to improve our living conditions. We took a thoughtful step by purchasing goats worth $200 to help us earn a living in the near future. While we may be too old to manage them, We are fortunate to have grandchildren who will lend a helping hand in rearing these animals. In addition, we set aside $50 to cover miscellaneous expenses. I want to express my deepest gratitude to GiveDirectly for this support. It has brought joy to our hearts and hopes for a more secure and comfortable future.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
In the next one year and beyond I have plans of fencing my compound and starting up a goat keeping project. This is a more viable project that will surely help us in the days to come and I look forward to achieving it soon enough. Here, we have just had to take one day at a time. The harsh climatic conditions seems not to change anytime and this makes it hard for us to make ends meet.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I am so happy about GiveDirectly for the support we received. I personally have never seen any support of this nature from any other NGO or even the government. The company came to our rescue at the hour of our need and we are grateful for this. We would not have had such plans as we have had were it not for GiveDirectly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used a total of $160 to purchase goats that I now take care of them in my farm. Another $130 was used to buy food such as maize grains and beans for my family. This was informed by the fact that we lacked food for a long time following prolonged droughts and this was a perfect opportunity for me to purchase food for my family in bulk. There are days when my grandchildren could tell me to cook for them food and since we did not have any, I would just ask them to be patient. O am happy that GiveDirectly came in handy and salvaged the situation which was getting worse.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
My aide is in charge of my phone at all times. This is because I have a lot of faith in him and know he won't steal from me. Additionally, I don't want to be the one carrying the phone around because I know I'll lose it easily. My helper told me the wonderful news when he returned home that fateful evening. As soon as I realized I would finally be able to accomplish my life ambitions, pleasure filled my heart, and I immediately shared the news with my spouse.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Over the past few weeks, we have been eating properly, and I have never gone to bed without taking anything. Due to the timely transfer from GiveDirectly, all of this was made possible. I was able to use it to purchase 90 kg of corn for our needs. In addition, I was able to sow some maize, which will guarantee food security for at least a few weeks following the harvest. Due to their present state, which is not so promising, one thing I know for sure is that God will soon provide a way and grant us rain.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Despite the current tough weather conditions, I have never given up on subsistence farming. Being elderly, my spouse and I are unable to perform any strenuous labor. Because of this, we've had to rely on our kids and a few goats we raise for food. I was able to prepare a portion of my land with the transfer, purchase some corn seeds, and pay for the work of weeding. I paid KES 6,000 in total on all of these. I have hope that I will harvest enough maize to feed us for a few weeks, even if it doesn't appear to be in great shape owing to a lack of rain. I also spent KES 10,000 on food items and KES 1,500 on transportation to our trading center, where we did our shopping. We still have the corn we purchased, and I think it will keep us going for a while.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
We recently received rainfall. We had readied our farms for planting though we never had money to buy the seedlings. We were planning to sell a goat but the proceeds could not have been sufficient to buy them. We are glad that the transfers came at such a time like this. We intend to use $ 50 to buy seedlings and another $150 to fence the farm to keep away goats from feeding on the crops, goats can be very destructive, and therefore to avoid losses it is necessary to fence off the farm. We anticipate that the food crops will do well and sustain us for months .
What is the happiest part of your day?
We are happy that God has been gracious to us. We have been in good health in the past couple of months. Despite the numerous challenges that we face and the inadequate food we have enjoyed a relatively healthy life which is normally rare for old age people like us. We pray to God to give us more years of healthy living.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
We are now people of old age and we are not able to engage in any meaningful economic activity and so it is hard to put food on the table safe for a few goats that we sometimes sell to buy foodstuffs and household needs. Indeed food insecurity has made our lives very difficult. This has been worsened by the drought that had persisted and also the ever-rising cost of living. We depend on our children sometimes for help whenever they have a surplus. At times we feel like we have become a burden to our children. We used to receive government transfers for the but it has been a while since it was last released, subsequently it has made our lives hard.
