How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Currently, my cow is expected and my short-term goal is to wait until after birth and start milking my cow for commercial purposes. I plan to sell a liter at $0.62 which will help me pay school fees for my children without strain.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
The staff is polite from the beginning of the project to the end. I got to interact with them with no fear and even though they are helping us, they were kind to us.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Before the transfer, I lived in a house that was not in good condition every day I would wake with the fear that it will collapse. I worked as a night guard getting a pay of $50 a month. This money was not enough to pay school fees for my children and transportation to and from work. Things were tough and most days we would take only one meal a day. Receiving this transfer has enabled me to build a house for my family, I now stay in a two-roomed house, bought furniture, and bought a dairy cow.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was 8 am and I had gone to the river to fetch water for the cow to drink when suddenly I heard my phone ringing hence notifying me of a new message. I stopped to check what it could all be about. I was surprised when I found out that it was an SMS saying that I had received KES 55000 in my mobile money account that GiveDirectly had earlier promised us. I was so happy on seeing this. I hurriedly finished what I was doing and I went back home. I shared the good news with my wife when I got home and she was so happy too on hearing about it. We thanked God because we now knew that we were going to be able to fulfill the plans that we had made.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The transfer has brought a big difference in our lives as a family. Our living standard has been uplifted since we have gotten what we didn't have before, that is, a cow. The children are happy looking after their cow. They no longer go to the neighbors to help the other children look after their cows. We also managed to increase the number of chickens that we rearing. The chickens are still young but they are going to be of great help to us in the future when they will have all matured. We will be able to get more eggs for sale hence more income. Thank you so much GiveDirectly for your big support.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
We spent KES 25000 of our recent transfer on buying a cow. We decided to buy the cow because we didn't have our own. The one that we used to rear, we had borrowed it from someone. Sometimes when the cow is dry, we lack a source of milk and we are forced to buy some for preparing tea. Milk for sale is not usually easily available due to high demand. We thus usually spend a lot of time looking for it in the morning which usually results in our son being late to go to school. With the new cow, we will have a constant supply of milk when one cow is dry. Other than that, we spent KES 6000 on buying a wire mesh for placing it all around the chicken house. We decided to do so so that we could restrain our chickens from going out to destroy crops on other people's farms. We also bought more chickens for rearing where we spent KES 9000 on them. We only had 20 chickens, we thus decided to buy 60 more. The chickens are usually of great help to us since I usually sell the eggs during the market day and the money that I get from the sales, usually helps me in paying school fees for my child and buying foodstuffs that are needed at school. We also spent KES 8800 on buying some chairs. We had managed to build the house but we had not bought chairs. With the remaining transfer amount, we spent it on buying clothes for the children and food for our consumption.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means the establishment of small-scale dairy farming. I am a small-scale crop farmer with 0.8 acres of land where I have planted animal feeds such as nappier grass and boma rhodes in 0.4 acres .I had plans to buy a dairy cow in the past 3 months but because of sickness and medical expenses towards my wife I could not afford to buy it.I am extremely happy that this transfers will enable me purchase a dairy cow at a cost of KES 35000.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I am a father of 3 children two boys and a girl. Two months ago I was blessed with a daughter and this has brought joy to my life. My sons have been asking me for a baby girl to play with them and when Blessings my daughter was born last year everyone has been happy and do not want to leave her side.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
In the past three months, my wife experienced traumatic childbirth which affected her memory. This has led to the dependence on my mother for the care of my wife as well as the baby. I have also had to auit my job in order to take care of the farm activities as well and the family. For all this period we have been in and out of the hospital and this has led to a high hospital bill on our household. The health conditions of my wife is the biggest challenge am currently facing.
