How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My major goal was for me to set up a goat rearing business, with this, I am assured that whenever I will be having any financial issues like school fees, I am assured that I can comfortably sort them out, My next goal is for me to be able to acquire a dairy cow, which I am hopeful that if all goes well, I will be able to use the profit from the goat farming in acquiring it.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
We were well educated on the program that we were getting into well, we were also allowed to ask questions which were well addressed, GiveDirectly lifted our lives amazingly, the changes are well evident in our villages, we have people who have built decent houses, bought cows and many more, So far I don't see anything that was not done well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My dream was for me to start a goat rearing business, thus when I received my transfer, I used KES 20,000 to start up a goat rearing project, I am hopeful that I will be able to sort all my financial needs with it, goats are also easy to manage and they are drought resistant meaning that they will suit the area that we live in, I was unable to start one due to financial issues, I then used the remaining amount on clothes, sofa sets and beddings. I am so grateful for the great milestone in our lives.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was at home going about my daily duties. At 8 a.m, I received a notification that I had received KES 55,000 from GiveDirectly. My heart was filled was so much joy, especially because I finally could afford to put food on the table for my family.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Being able to provide the basic needs, especially, food for my two children is wonderful. Before receiving the cash transfer from GD, we could barely afford to do so. I am unemployed, and therefore have no source of income. We had to have just two meals a day, even when my children wanted to eat more, but we could not afford it. As a mother, this broke my heart. With this transfer, however, things are different. I was able to buy foodstuff including maize, beans, rice and sugar. We can now afford to have three meals a day. Thanks, GD!
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I thought it would be a great idea to acquire a dairy cow that could supply our household with milk. Before, we had to buy the same, at KES 60 per litre, every day. This was too costly for us, especially since I am unemployed and have no source of income. So I spent KES 20,000 on the acquisition of a one. I also spent KES 20,000 on tilling the land for the cultivation of maize and beans. Finally, I spent KES 10,000 on buying food, including rice, maize and sugar. I'm glad that we now have enough food for the four of us.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
When I receive this transfer I would like to plough my piece of land. I have been digging a small portion near my house which was not sufficient to produce enough food for my family. I am planning to expand so that I can plant different kind of foods. Millet and sweet potatoes grow well in our area since it needs minimal rainfall. This will cost around KES 20000 inclusive of ploughing cost, fencing and buying seeds and seedlings. We would also like to purchase a dairy cow. We have one but it cannot produce enough milk to sustain our household needs. A good cow will cost 20000 KES and the rest of the money will go to other household needs.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of the day is in the afternoon. This is the time when I Know I have food for my family. I rejoice knowing since morning they have found something to eat.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship has been food shortages. We even sold one of our cow to buy food. This has somehow delayed so many projects that we had. Our area is prone to draught and most of the food crops withers due to insufficient rainfall.
