What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent my money from my last transfer to start a business. For many years, I depended heavily on my farm, growing different crops for my use and sell in the market. Since the drought begun, I lost everything, including the harvest I was expecting during that time. Since then I have struggled to make end meet since I did not have a job. Recently, I started a small business where I sell different fish. The business has picked well and immediately after I received my fifth transfer; I opted to add more stock to into the business to boost my revenue. Besides adding more stock to my business, I also bought two chickens. Once these chickens multiply in numbers, it will be a splendid avenue for me to venture into poultry farming and earn an income from it too.

In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
This organization is doing very well because I can see the progress in my own home and also in the village everyone seems happier and glad and struggling less financially so I really commend them for their great job I hope they continue with the good worth.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
A day before the transfers my children had actually been sent home from school and so when the money arrived it felt like it was heaven sent and so I went ahead and paid KES 1,800 to the school administration to my three children which was split equally and they finally went back to school which was a huge relief. We also did not have any food left in the house so I went and bought a bag of maize flour which contained a dozen packets and it was worth KES 1,050 and I was left with a balance of 150.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was in the morning at around nine and I was busy doing the dishes, honestly speaking I was elated because I was not expecting it at all plus also not forgetting my children were back home due to unpaid fees. I felt as though God had heard my prayers. I also had no money left for a meal that night so I was grateful that I could at least get some food for my family.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
This money comes a long way for us and especially the education to our kids because my husband and I are financially unstable since we have no permanent jobs and tend to work when we get the opportunity to like casual labourers therefore leaving our family very vulnerable and barely having enough to make ends meet. But with this money coming in we can at least take care of the kids tuition and also nourishment at home on the days we do not get lucky with work.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
At the time, when the money was sent, my kids had actually been sent home that same day due to the pending balance in the tuition fee, so when the money arrived I immediately sent then back to school and since it was three of them I payed KES 300 for each one of them and so it totalled to KES 900. As for the rest of the money not much was left so I bought laundry detergent for KES 150 and for the reminder of the money I bought maize flour which went for KES 100 so that we could have a meal that night.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have a number of things that I have been struggling with due to lack of finances. The first one is school fees for my children. I pay close to KES 3,000 shillings per term and the amount will increase as they proceed to higher classes. This money from GiveDirectly will go a long way in helping me educate my children. I also had a grocery business which collapsed due to lack of money. I plan to set aside KES 3,000 to restart the business and expand it more with the subsequent transfers.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My day's activities include fetching water and doing other household chores. I also do casual jobs whenever they are available. At the end of the day I am usually very tired. I enjoy the moment I am done with all the day's work. After taking supper, I take time to relax with my children.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The challenges that I am facing are as a result of limited finances. My husband is a fisherman working away from home while I am here at home doing casual jobs. He rarely comes home and occasionally sends me money. Fishing in the ocean depends on the season. Currently we are at the off pick season. In a week, he sends us between KES 200-500. This is barely enough to cater for all the needs here at home. I have 3 children; feeding them, clothing them and paying their school fees has been an uphill task.
